Veterinary Medical Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

About the Role

The Veterinary Medical Director is a critical leadership position, driving the standard of medical excellence, fostering a collaborative culture among the DVM team, and serving as the primary bridge between the clinical staff and management. You will be responsible for clinical quality, procedure implementation, mentoring DVMs, and resolving complex client medical concerns.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Clinical Leadership & Quality

  • Dispute Resolution: Guide DVMs in resolving complex client medical complaints by detangling issues, diffusing tension, and implementing logical resolutions in collaboration with management.
  • Performance Management: Partner with management to formulate, deliver, and coach DVMs through performance evaluations and constructive feedback.
  • Medical SOPs: Work closely with the DVM group and management to create, roll out, and ensure consistent adherence to Standard Operating Procedures for medical workflow.
  • Bridge to Management: Act as the liaison for the DVM team, facilitating consensus on input (e.g., equipment needs, policy changes) and ensuring efficient communication with management.

2. Veterinary Medical Practice

  • Perform comprehensive procedures including routine surgeries, routine wellness care, and acute/chronic disease management.
  • Provide emergency stabilization for critical patients when the Critical Care DVM is unavailable.
  • Communicate warmly and clearly with clients, explaining options with sensitivity to emotional and financial constraints.
  • Ensure prompt, accurate, and comprehensive updating of all medical records.
  • Commit to frequent Continuing Education to maintain a practice aligned with current best standards.

3. Mentorship & Team Development

  • Act as a mentor and coach for both support staff and fellow DVMs.
  • Facilitate skill development by teaching in the moment, sharing accumulated knowledge, and providing performance feedback.
  • Role model appropriate clinical and professional behaviors for the entire hospital team.

Logistics & Requirements

  • Qualifications: Licensed to practice as a DVM in Michigan (Required). DEA license (Required). Prior management experience (Preferred).
  • Schedule: Must be willing and able to work evenings and weekends. Expectation is at least 50% of the weekend day shifts per month.
  • Must average 35 hours per week.
  • Physical Demands: Frequent exposure to animals that may bite/scratch and exposure to chemical, anesthetic, and radiation hazards. Must be able to move around the building and remain stationary for prolonged periods when examining patients.

Base Pay: $175,000.00 - $215,000.00 per year
