Description:
The Saginaw Children’s Zoo is looking for individuals new or familiar to the zoo field who are interested in gaining veterinary experience with exotic animals including a variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and more. Under the mentorship of the staff veterinarian and an experienced veterinary technician, this vet nurse position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting the veterinary team with preventative, medical and surgical management of collection animals
- Aid in communication between Veterinary and Animal Care Teams, especially on weekends
- Maintaining high-quality care and treatment of quarantine and hospitalized patients as needed
- Assist in maintaining clinic cleanliness, routine equipment maintenance, and organization of pharmacy inventory
- Filling and dispensing prescriptions for patients
- Performing diagnostic testing as needed
- Public interaction and visitor engagement
- Assist in Animal Care animal training as requested
- Upholding legal and accurate medical records
Schedule:
This is a part-time (<20 hrs/week) position with flexibility for said candidate to work within another facility, should it fit within a consistent weekly schedule. The position is expected to have the following shifts with start times subject to change based on the need of the veterinary and animal care teams and time of year (e.g.: closed winter season vs. open summer season).
- Saturdays and Sundays 9am-3pm, and
- Mondays 8:30am -1:30pm
There may be a potential for this position to expand in hours to include an additional weekday every week or fill in as relief for other technician/nurse during the week as needed.
Qualifications: **
This position is intended to introduce an individual to the workings of the veterinary career field within an AZA-accredited institution, whether interested in staying as a veterinary technician or advancing to become an exotic/zoo veterinarian. The following items are preferred, but not required.
- Bachelor’s, AA, or equivalent degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science or other related degrees.
- May be equivalent to a minimum one year animal husbandry experience, depending on position/experience
- Rabies vaccinated, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Proof of negative tuberculosis testing in the last six months, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
- Positivity and enthusiasm for striving towards the practice of high-quality medicine in a small zoo setting
- Strong and dependable work ethic
- Efficient and effective communicator in both oral and written formats
Requirements:
- Individuals with 1-2 years of experience as a technician/nurse in a veterinary clinic/hospital
- Maintains active veterinary technician license for the state of Michigan
- Maintains active Michigan Driver’s License
- Experience working on a team and communicating efficiently, effectively, and compassionately with others
- Ability to work on projects independently without direct supervision
- Ability to manage and prioritize time and projects effectively
- Computer competency and proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including select holidays, weekends, evenings and emergency situations.
- Ability to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. on a regular basis
- Ability to work safely around allergens such as hay, straw, and grass
- Ability to follow all procedures, protocols and policies.
Wage: $20/hr
