Full job description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Vineyard Manager to oversee all aspects of vineyard operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for producing high-quality fruit, managing vineyard crews, vineyard health, crop production, and seasonal labor while ensuring high-quality fruit that meets Ventosa quality standards. The ideal candidate has experience in cool-climate viticulture, leadership skills, a passion for producing premium wine, and thrives in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.

Key Responsibilities

Vineyard Operations & Management

  • Plan, organize, and execute all vineyard activities including pruning, planting, canopy management, irrigation, pest and disease control, and harvest
  • Monitor vine health, fruit development, and crop yield throughout the growing season
  • Maintain detailed records of vineyard activities, crop estimates, and spray programs
  • Implement sustainable and environmentally responsible farming practices
  • Pruning & tying plants

Landscape maintenance

  • Mowing, hedge trimming, pulling weeds, mulching, weed whacking
  • Snow plowing, shoveling entrance steps
  • Spread salt on parking lot

Team Leadership & Labor Management

  • Recruit, train, and supervise vineyard staff and seasonal crews
  • Schedule and coordinate daily and seasonal work assignments
  • Ensure compliance with all labor laws and workplace safety standards

Equipment & Facility Management

  • Oversee maintenance and operation of vineyard equipment and machinery
  • Manage inventory of tools, chemicals, and supplies
  • Coordinate repairs and ensure safe equipment use

Collaboration with Winemaking Team

  • Work closely with the winemaker to align vineyard practices with wine style goals
  • Conduct regular vineyard sampling and provide updates on fruit maturity
  • Coordinate harvest logistics, including timing and labor

Budgeting & Planning

  • Develop and manage vineyard budgets, including labor, materials, and capital expenditures
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost savings
  • Assist in long-term vineyard planning, including replanting and expansion

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture, Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3+ years of vineyard management experience, preferably in a cool-climate region
  • Strong knowledge of vine physiology, pest/disease management, and soil health
  • Experience operating and maintaining vineyard equipment
  • Proven leadership and team management skills
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions, especially during peak seasons
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required)

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in the Finger Lakes or similar cool-climate wine regions
  • Pesticide licensed
  • Familiarity with sustainable, organic, or biodynamic practices
  • Degree in Viticulture, Agriculture, Horticulture, or related field
  • Experience with sustainable or organic farming practices
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus

Schedule

  • Full-time, year-round
  • Weekends and extended hours required during growing and harvest seasons
