POSITION: Wastewater Operations & Maintenance Worker

DEPARTMENT / DIVISION: Wastewater Utility / Public Works


Under direction, performs skilled work of moderate difficulty in the repair, maintenance and operations of a variety of wastewater treatment facilities and equipment, laboratory and plant operations, performs other duties as assigned by Management.

The primary function of this position is to perform activities primarily at the Wastewater Treatment

Plant, but duties extend to remote locations of equipment and Lift Stations. This individual performs a variety of semiskilled and skilled maintenance tasks, and does related work as required.


Work includes performing maintenance on sewage treatment equipment, diagnosing and analyzing repair needs, Treatment Plant buildings, Treatment Plant grounds, Collection system, lift stations, conduct laboratory related tasks. Assignments may include use of hand or power tools, welding and cutting equipment and operation of power-driven equipment, CDL required Vehicles, and miscellaneous other vehicles. Employees in this class will work under the direct supervision of the

Chief Operator or Plant Superintendent. Normally, this employee will work with other operators.


1. Lawn care, tree and shrub care, snow removal, custodial building maintenance which includes light plumbing, electrical, building, fabrication, painting, and general housekeeping and upkeep.

2. Maintenance, adjustment and repair of equipment, buildings and grounds.

3. Maintenance of Collection System (operate mobile sewer cleaning equipment.)

4. Maintenance of Lift Stations (pumps, motors, alarm / computer system, housekeeping etc.)

5. Laboratory duty, including but not limited to performing chemical and bacteriological tests and standard analyses on raw and treated wastewater and receiving waters. Tests and performs analysis for various elements including but not limited to: BOD, total suspended solids, dissolved solids, residual chlorine, ammonia, coli form bacteria, etc.;

6. Collects in-plant samples, places portable sewer samplers, and may monitor industrial wastewater discharges.

7. Maintains accurate records of tests performed and observations made, performs data entry and reviews analysis results and consults with Superintendent / Chief Operator on test results.

8. Prepares reagents and cleans and sets up laboratory glassware, regularly calibrates meters, probes, instruments, and equipment. Maintain / update computers, operating system, and software, printers so as to keep technology up to date and functional.

9. Maintain a clean and acceptable laboratory environment;

10. Adheres to all safety procedures, practices and requirements. Performs other duties as assigned by Management.

11. “On Call” 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Carries city provided cellular telephone and responds to emergencies when notified in a timely manner.


This position requires knowledge and experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment including, but not limited to such items as pumps, motors, gear drives, trucks, blowers, etc., knowledge of safety precautions and wastewater treatment principals and practices are also necessary. This position requires a high sense of responsibility and the initiative to work independently. Must possess physical strength and agility sufficient to do manual labor for extended periods under varying weather conditions. Must be available to work extended shifts.


Graduation from high school or equivalent, and three (3) years of previous work experience is required. Past experience in municipal operations, mechanical operations, or technical operations desirable. Post high school education is desirable. Possession of a certificate as issued by the

Illinois Environmental Protection as a Treatment Plant Operator is desirable.


Possession of a valid CDL driver’s license is required within 90 days of hire.

Obtain / possess certifications of competency from Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Class


Attend training for Continuing Educational Units.
