Position Description

Teachers at REV Institutes guide student-driven learning by providing relevant and meaningful instruction to a group of students who have no speech or unreliable verbal speech and use a form of alternative communication. This position would involve training during Winter 2024 with a teaching commitment of two Saturdays/month from date of hire through May and again from September through December. If the 2024 year is a success, the candidate will be offered the position for the next calendar year as well.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Commit to working two Saturdays a month (10am - 12pm) during Spring & Fall Institute and to use time outside scheduled Institute hours (paid planning) to create lessons / activities following a prescribed planning format.
  • Use student-generated ideas to create engaging lessons designed for learners of varying communicative abilities (examples and templates provided)
  • Develop relationships with group members based on respect and presumption of competence
  • Foster an inclusive and encouraging environment for students to learn, practice skills, and form friendships

Specific Responsibilities of the Job

Under the supervision of the Program Director, teachers will lead a two-hour group session with autistic students ranging in age from 10 - 25. Teachers will collaborate with the Program Director to plan each session’s structure, which includes group games, a lesson based on student interests, and time for conversations. The teacher must be flexible, respectful of all students and their communication support partners, and open to feedback from students and all current REV staff. While the Program Director will provide guidance toward lesson structure and topic selection, the teacher will be responsible for creation of a lesson plan, class questions, and slides following a training period.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates should have prior experience working with individuals with disabilities. While experience with spelling, pointing, typing to communicate and other Augmentative & Alternative Communication methods are preferred, it is not strictly required; however, an openness to learn about alternative communication is strictly required.

Candidates must be responsible for lesson planning and punctuality; respectful to all students, communication partners and families; and comfortable leading a group composed of students of varying ages and communicative abilities.

Knowledge of differentiating instruction and best teaching practices are preferred. Prior teaching experience, especially including virtual group instruction, is preferred but not required for otherwise qualified candidates.
