Full job description

The Youth Educator/Advocate has the dual goal of working to prevent domestic violence and working to change the cultural conditions that allow it to occur. This position has the responsibility of delivering NextStep’s school-based youth education programming to youth ages K-College, primarily in Hancock County and occasionally in Washington County; developing and maintaining relationships with educators in Hancock County; and informing the development of new materials and approaches, including radio and podcasting programs. The Youth Educator/Advocate will also engage in direct service to adult and young adult survivors of domestic violence.

This is a full-time, hourly position based in Hancock County, Maine, with some in-state travel required. Must be available to work on-site at our Ellsworth and/or Machias Resource Centers and to travel to schools and other venues regularly. Our primary operating hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some night and weekend work required.

Required:

  • Experience working with youth.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of domestic, sexual, and dating violence and stalking.
  • Understanding of challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Stellar public speaking and group facilitation skills.
  • Ability to communicate and develop relationships with other professionals that work with youth
  • Computer competency, including proficiency with databases; Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel; Zoom; Google classroom, and other virtual platforms used for delivering virtual education.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • High ethical standards.
  • Willingness to learn and grow.

College degree preferred.

Other requirements include a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and vehicle insurance; a landline or cellphone with reliable service; and satisfactory response from government agencies to required background checks.

Physical demands/Conditions/Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand, walk, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, and pull, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls, or equipment. The employee must be able to work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work is performed primarily in a confidential office setting and/or remotely. Ability to multi-task is required.
