YOUTH SERVICES SUPERVISOR – MASON LIBRARY

Position summary

The Youth Services (YS) Supervisor is responsible for performing all aspects of library services to infants through high school and their caregivers; implements and manages YS which may include acquisitions, deaccessions, collection development, circulation, technology, and physical arrangement of the space. The librarian must maintain currency in emerging library trends, developments in all areas of youth literature and services, and library technology. Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas of YS.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures that the public is promptly, courteously, and efficiently helped with excellent customer service; helps create an atmosphere that celebrates inclusion and diversity; handles patron issues and complaints.
  • Provides circulation, reference, reader’s advisory, and patron assistance services; explains library policies and procedures.
  • Selects and orders all YS print, non-print, and other materials for YS at Mason library; manages the budget & submits Town warrants for invoices for all materials and services; supervises processing and cataloging of all new materials; ensures that the collection is regularly inventoried, weeded, refreshed, and maintained.
  • Designs, schedules, and conducts a variety of year-round activities and programs for youth; organizes, implements and trains staff for the summer reading program using Beanstack; maintains statistical records of participation for State reports;
  • Collaborates with local CFCE, and other community groups to develop programs and foster good community relations. Seeks and applies for grants to support programming. Works with the Friends of the Library to fund and sponsor programs;
  • Responsible for working with Marketing Manager for YS publicity and social media promotion;
  • Supervises YS Assistant, YS circulation staff and supplements Circulation Supervisor training; Supervises YS volunteers and internships. Recruits volunteers for specific projects and programs;
  • Ensures well-maintained and comfortable YS environment for patrons and staff; reports maintenance issues in the YS areas;
  • Coordinates outreach to schools and teachers to expand patron reach and increase beneficial community relations;
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned by Library Director.

SUPERVISION
Works under the supervision of the Library Director. This position makes recommendations to and advises the Library Director in all aspects of youth services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed under busy and sometimes noisy library conditions; evening and Saturday work is requred.

The employee operates standard office and library equipment. The employee has ongoing contact with the general public, town departments, schools, vendors, civic organizations, and other libraries. Maintains confidentiality of patron records including materials borrowed, money owed, patron contact information and names of family members.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university or any equivalent combination of education and experience is required, including three years library experience; experience with youth programming, collection development, and working with children and young adults is required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of library administration; managerial and supervisory method; project management, planning and organizational skills; knowledge of child development, passion for youth literature; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and patrons; ability to work independently. excellent oral and written communication skills; interpersonal and problem-solving skills; computer skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimal physical effort is required to perform most duties; some duties require moderate effort. The employee is required to stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb, stoop, reach with hands and arms, and lift books and furniture weighing up to 30 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read and analyze documents and use a computer.
