2023 Better Work Awards FAQs
What are the Better Work Awards?
The Indeed 2023 Better Work Awards honor top companies on Indeed for work wellbeing. These companies perform high on wellbeing metrics (happiness, satisfaction, purpose and manageable stress), indicating a prioritization of elements such as flexibility, belonging, trust, manager support, appreciation, fair pay and more for their workforce.
How are the 2023 winners determined?
Millions of employees rate and review their companies on Indeed each year, which includes ratings for their levels of happiness, satisfaction, purpose and stress — their wellbeing — at work. This is what’s known as the Work Wellbeing Score, a metric shared on thousands of Indeed company profiles worldwide.
To determine the 2023 Top Companies for Work Wellbeing in the U.S. (as well as in the U.K. and Canada), Indeed studied work wellbeing ratings from the past year and ranked companies based on that data. To qualify, companies in the U.S. must have received work wellbeing ratings from at least 200 employees in the last 12 months.
How do I submit my company for the Indeed Better Work Awards?
There is no nomination process and no cost for consideration. Indeed awards are unique because they’re based on reviews, ratings and insights shared voluntarily and anonymously by employees who complete a company review.
This means we consider all companies with company ratings, reviews and/or work wellbeing responses and decide winners based on how employees say they feel working at a company. For consideration in future awards, encourage employees to share a review on Indeed. (Employee reviews must meet Indeed’s Company Reviews Policies & Guidelines.)
Why are award scores for winning companies slightly different from the wellbeing scores I see on Indeed company pages?
Indeed’s 2023 Better Work Awards take into account work wellbeing data over a 12-month time frame to give job seekers and employers the freshest look into top companies and their efforts over the past year. Meanwhile, the Work Wellbeing Score featured on Indeed company profiles represents all-time data from employees and therefore may appear lower than their awards ranking score.
Additionally, country-specific awards are based on feedback from local employees in each country. For example, our U.S. list considers only U.S.-based employee feedback from the past 12 months.

Indeed’s Work Wellbeing Score FAQs
Why does Indeed measure work wellbeing?
Indeed collects and displays wellbeing insights to help people find better and more meaningful work. This data helps jobseekers as they evaluate which companies to work for and inspires companies to foster environments where people can thrive.
Since we started collecting work wellbeing data, employees have submitted more than 15.3 million survey responses, enabling us to provide data for thousands of companies and make these scores freely accessible to Indeed users. Find additional information about the importance of wellbeing, as well as the specific dimensions and methodology used to calculate work wellbeing scores, in the Employer Help Center.
How were the work wellbeing questions and dimensions identified?
Indeed developed the work wellbeing methodology with guidance from Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, a distinguished professor of psychology and vice chair at the University of California, Riverside; and Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, a professor of economics and behavioral science at the University of Oxford.
The methodology is based on existing social science standards for measuring general wellbeing — including evaluative, affective and eudaemonic dimensions of wellbeing — and is applied by institutions such as the OECD, U.K. Office of National Statistics and the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre.
What questions are included in the Work Wellbeing Score survey?
The Work Wellbeing Score survey measures responses to statements for four key areas, called indicators, using a scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree”:
- Happiness: I feel happy at work most of the time.
- Purpose: My work has a clear sense of purpose.
- Satisfaction: Overall, I am completely satisfied with my job.
- Stress-free: I feel stressed at work most of the time.
In addition to these four wellbeing indicators, Indeed measures 11 drivers of wellbeing. This data is collected using the same scale and displayed individually to help people understand what is influencing wellbeing. They include:
- Achievement: I am achieving most of my goals at work.
- Appreciation: People at work appreciate me as a person.
- Belonging: I feel a sense of belonging in my company.
- Compensation: I am paid fairly for my work.
- Energy: In most of my work tasks, I feel energized.
- Flexibility: My work has the time and location flexibility I need.
- Inclusion: My work environment feels inclusive and respectful of all people.
- Learning: I often learn something at work.
- Management: My manager helps me succeed.
- Support: Some people at work give me support and encouragement.
- Trust: I can trust people in my company.
How is the Work Wellbeing Score calculated?
Indeed’s Work Wellbeing Score is a composite metric that measures the key work wellbeing indicators: happiness, stress, satisfaction and purpose. These four items are weighed equally when calculating the Work Wellbeing Score.
Indeed users self-identify the name of their employer at the beginning of the survey. These questions are displayed to Indeed users as a full set, and the survey appears when an Indeed user goes to leave a company review for an employer.
Respondents answer the survey questions on a five-point scale, where 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree. Points are assigned for each response on a scale ranging from 40 to 100. For example, when an employee selects “strongly agree,” a point value of 100 is assigned, and when an employee selects “strongly disagree,” a point value of 40 is assigned.
How do I improve my company’s Work Wellbeing Score?
The best way to improve your company’s Work Wellbeing Score is to take action. This means encouraging your current employees to take the survey. But don’t stop there — it’s also important to track your company’s performance over time, identifying areas to improve, taking action to make changes and showcasing your strengths to maximize your employer brand.
