I worked in retail and had aspirations of moving up within the company. During my time there it became pretty obvious that moving up (in most cases) was not as much about consistent performance, drive, and ambition as it was about who you knew and skirting the line of ethics. So much so that I was told directly that I did not have a very good chance of getting into the B2B department because of the reputation of the retail side. For a year, I spent every off day that fell during the week shadowing in the B2B office an hour away from my house trying to get past that stigma. I eventually left the company because of it and the dwindling commission plan.
It was good compensation for the level of the job (when I started)
Difficult to get out of the retail side
