incompetent Management With No Benefits
Barista/Cashier (Former Employee) – 6212 29th St NE, Tacoma, WA 98422 – January 17, 2019
Started working here as a barista but you only really get a couple barista shifts a week. You're actually more of a convenience store clerk than anything. When I was hired I was told there would be a lot of opportunity for overtime but overtime actually isn't allowed.
Within a few months all senior staff and management left because of an incompetent HR person who took over as management. The new HR/Manager couldn't even work a shift if needed. They are also horrible at their job as HR.
Most office staff are family or close friends of the owner so it's a family run business with a lot of preferential treatment to those employees.
There are no uninterrupted breaks and HR/management actually took all the chairs in the building away so we couldn't even sit down between customers and after work tasks were completed.
No benefits and no paid sick leave/paid time off.
I was told they were hiring at $15 and hour but no one ever told me my actual pay upon hiring and when I found out I was only making $13 two weeks later I had to argue and bring in my paperwork with a blank pay rate to show I was lied too and receive my $15. New employees were hired on at $13/hr some being told they would be raised to $15 after six months and others not. No one received their promised raises after six months. So be cautious with what you are being paid and always check your paycheck is in full for hours worked.
We were told we'd be able to get coffee sales bonuses but only received it once even though we were told we made our sales goal twice after.
Tips are okay but not as good as you'll get in a real coffee shop, especially because they do not accept cc tips.
The owner seems nice but is no longer involved in running the business and has left the HR person (his cousin) to run things. Seems he should step back in and get things running well again.
All in all it's not a great place to work. The only plus was fellow employees are great but all struggling to want to stay due to poor management. The turn over rate is very high so there's always a staffing shortage and scheduling problems. Also don't expect to get your schedule in a timely manner, I think I got it one week in advance once. Expect your schedule to come anywhere from 5-2 days in advance.
no breaks, no benefits, no advancement, poor management, no paid time off, high turn over rate
