Good Company Inwardly Focused Management
Business Development Manager (Former Employee) – South Florida, FL – October 27, 2015
Here is an objective review on Ryder. It is a great company to work for. You'll learn a lot and, if you are willing to relocate, there are good opportunities for advancement. Ryder is a well known and respected company in the Transportation and Logistics Industry. Ryder offers their customers a great infrastructure and has a top notch solutions portfolio to offer prospects and clients. If you work hard, you will be rewarded with commissions and bonuses. Promotions are dependent on your willingness to relocate.
On the negative side, the senior leadership at Ryder, although very capable and well intentioned, is so far removed from the realities of the field that they have no clue what's right or what's wrong with customer service, customer billing and the challenges their employees face daily. Middle Management (Directors and VP's) for the most part are "YES MEN and WOMEN" and are afraid to speak up about the opportunities for improvement that exist within their business area. The culture at the management level is to communicate up that everything is great and there are no issues whatsoever in their business unit, even if they are short staffed, or an initiative simply does not work, or a process is creating a lot more work than results. If you communicate and objective truth that contradicts Sr. Management, even if its clearly supported with evidence, the manager is viewed as an underperformer because the process "is working" for everyone else. But truth be told, is not working for anyone is just that no one dares to speak up.
Recently, I had two ex colleagues of mine, Director Level guys, talking about their kids graduating from college and wanting to come to work for Ryder. In both cases, the current employees did not want their kids to come work for Ryder. I think that says a lot.
