Does Diplomacy have a future?
Foreign Service Officer (Former Employee) – Washington/Metro, DC – October 13, 2017
I had a good run, but it was time to go... The FSO career tracks, however, are still great, with varied overseas assignments, so even if the day-to-day work gets boring, there are still whole countries to explore; language training as needed; dedicated colleagues; and the opportunity to advance foreign policy/national security interests of the United States.
Downsides included frequent moves, which can be difficult for family members; long stretches away from friends/relatives in the US; bureaucratic obstacles (comes with the territory of any USG job!) and relatively low levels of compensation and benefits (as viewed over the course of a three decade career, and especially regarding hardship posts).
