Poor Owners & Management, but awesome coworkers.
Tour Guide (Former Employee) – Honolulu, HI – January 11, 2019
Typical day to day at Segway of Hawaii included cleaning the Segways, getting yelled at randomly by the owner and pedestrians, and being cut hours/tours if you did something to tick off the owners.
No matter how unsafe the conditions were outside, they would make you go out on tour during the rain, thunder, or even during the hurricane. This was due to the fact that they did not want to issue any refunds and "the guests will still enjoy riding the Segway regardless of weather" is what one of the owners had told us, but their motto is that they want to have "A safe and fun Segway glide!"
When they do decided to cancel the tour, they expect their tour guides to come in for roughly 30mins(even though the weather that day had been horrible long before the tour even starts) to handle all possible re-bookings or refunds.
This was due to the fact that 80% of the customers are Japanese, and no one in management or owners speak and understand the Language.
As far as I know, this company had operated without obtaining proper park permits. But our tour revolves around going to the parks for photos and their history.
They also want you to sell photos on tour. They want photos of the guest riding on their Segway, which requires the tour guide leading the group to take their eyes off the road to turn back to take photos. Yes, we had near collisions with many things and people. Yes, a few of the tour guides had fell trying to take photos. Why we do this? It is because the owners will yell at your relentlessly if you don't actually sell these photos. It doesn't matter to them whether you take them or not. You have to sell them. If not you will be retaliated by having your hours cut, or not being scheduled for a few weeks.
Majority of the bilingual tour guides that work here are awesome! They are the best bunches of people to work with. But, the owners and management has a far way to go.
The company isn't thought well by the community members in the area as well. We have been yelled at out of the blue, almost runned over by cars, and had people purposely trying to get runned over by us.
Overall no matter how awesome the customers and coworkers may be, it doesn't outweigh the stress of the incompetent owners.
