Full job description
Job Summary: To monitor swimmers, enforce safety rules and policies, and rescue distressed swimmers to provide a safe and fun environment for swimmers of all abilities.
Responsibilities:
Work with the other lifeguards in the pool to facilitate and enforce a safe swimming environment, which includes:
1. Work with the other guards to provide lessons on swimming and water safety techniques and practices to children and adults as needed;
2. Enforcing safety standards and policies among swimmers;
3. Monitoring swimmers;
4. Rescuing distressed swimmers as needed;
5. Provide assistance and/or accommodations to include participants with disabilities when able and appropriate to do so in accordance with agency operating procedures.
Work 20 – 35 hours per week (once campers arrive) on a variable schedule. Must be available M-F, Noon – 4pm for summer camp, and able to work evenings and weekends as needed, a minimum of once per week for pool parties, during June, July, and August.
Other Responsibilities:
- Follow all agency operating procedures and safety protocols.
- Maintaining a clean work area, including the pool, Pool House, and chemical room.
- Attending Agency meetings assigned.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
- As a part-time Camp Mary Orton employee, this position is eligible for additional training for other camp positions (e.g., Event Host, Facilitators, Maintenance). If such additional training is completed, this position may be assigned to shifts for those duties, as well as Lifeguard shifts.
Qualifications:
Completed Lifeguarding Certification from a nationally recognized organization (American Red Cross, American Lifeguard Association, YMCA, United States Lifeguarding Association, etc.), including First Aid, CPR, and AED training. **Complete copies of all certifications must accompany the job application when submitted.**
Requires a satisfactory criminal background record. Must be at least age 18.
Must be able to swim; lift and carry distressed swimmers; perform duties while outdoors and exposed to a variety of weather conditions; observe swimmers and identify unsafe activities and distressed swimmers; listen for distress calls by swimmers; show patience; remain focused on responsibilities despite numerous distractions and interruptions in a noisy environment; and give oral instructions and feedback to student swimmers.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
Active engagement in indoor and outdoor environments with youth and adults.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs., and moving quickly in response to emergencies.
Ability to operate in varying weather conditions, noise levels, and physical terrain.
Facilitation in gyms, classrooms, pools, outdoor spaces, and camp settings.
Stamina and dexterity to support participant safety and behavioral regulation when necessary.
