A mental health practice supporting underserved communities needed to hire licensed clinicians to keep up with growing demand. With the goal of increasing representation in mental health care, the company’s founder & CEO turned to Indeed to connect with underrepresented talent and their allies.
Background: Improving representation in mental health care

Colorful Resilience is a Queer-Afro-Latina-owned outpatient mental health group practice primarily for underserved communities in Western Massachusetts. “[We focus] on providing services to BIPOC, LGBTQ, first-generation and immigrant communities,” explains Mayrena Guerrero, Founder & CEO.
Mayrena started the practice after she noticed a lack of clinical representation and cultural competency in the mental health field. To help remedy this disparity, she ensures that all of Colorful Resilience’s team members are representatives of the communities they serve, allies or both so they can better relate to the issues and struggles their clients face. According to Mayrena, the team has as much color and resilience as their clients.
Challenge: Limited time and resources for recruiting
Like many small business owners, Mayrena had to balance recruiting with managing and growing her business. But juggling all of these tasks quickly became overwhelming—and budgets were tight. “We’re a startup,” says Mayrena. “We don’t have the money to pay a recruiter. I don’t have the time to spend hours and hours seeking potential team members.”
That’s when Mayrena started using Indeed. “It was a very easy decision for me to turn to Indeed for them to be able to help me connect with potential team members in an efficient and effective way.”

Solution: A partner in the hiring process
Mayrena started by posting her open jobs on Indeed. Soon after, she partnered with Indeed’s customer service team to optimize her listings. “Within 24 hours, I got an email back from an actual human that understood the question I was asking and was able to be very specific about helping me make little changes that will make my ad more visible and more attractive to potential employees.”
With Indeed’s screener questions, Mayrena is able to specify the licenses she needs team members to have. “I make sure through screener questions that all of our clinicians are either LMHC (licensed mental health counselors) or LICSW (licensed independent clinical social workers),” she says. “And that makes it so much easier.”
When you mark screener questions as “deal breakers” on Indeed, we identify which applicants meet your set criteria and automatically filter out the ones who don’t. This can help you save time and effort in hiring since you won’t have to manually sort through large pools of applicants.

Some features described may not be available for all products.
Mayrena and her team also use Instant Match for better visibility and quality candidates. With Instant Match, when you post a Sponsored Job on Indeed, you get a list of candidates whose resumes on Indeed match your job description who you can invite to apply right away. On average, employers who sponsor their job post make a hire
As Mayrena explains: “I found [Instant Match] fantastic because, one day, I come to work and I look at my inbox and it says, ‘Oh, this person meets your qualifications.’ I looked at the resume. I was very impressed. I immediately get on the phone and the person says, ‘Well, that’s weird because I just did my resume last night.’ It was that quick to connect us with each other. I loved it.”

Results: A diverse team improving access to mental health care for all
With the help of Indeed, Mayrena has been able to connect with candidates with various cultural backgrounds, perspectives and lived experiences. “[Indeed] allows us access to a pool of people with different strengths and different specialties that make Colorful Resilience the strong team that we are,” she says.
Mayrena and her team are now able to provide inclusive mental health support not just in the Western Massachusetts area, but also virtually to those who need it across the state. Indeed has provided her with the tools, advice and resources she needs to expand her business and make big strides in improving access to mental health care for underserved communities. “It’s great to have Indeed as a partner in the hiring process,” she says.
