Brothers Serge and Red Volnick opened RedInk Tattoo Studio in New York’s famous Hell’s Kitchen in 2019. “RedInk Tattoo Studio just evolved,” says Serge. “My brother was at another tattoo studio, then decided one day it was time to move on to bigger and better things.”

RedInk owners and workers wear their hearts on their sleeves. For example, they run several humanitarian initiatives throughout the year, including raising funds for nonprofits like the American Cancer Foundation and A Moment of Magic.

RedInk also works with customers who have financial barriers if they want to get tattoos to cover scars from cancer, c-sections or cover-ups of hate-based tattoos. In addition to tattoos, they offer laser tattoo removal and have their own line of tattoo needles. They also have plans to launch new products like tattoo cream and saline in the near future.

Challenge: Hiring specialized talent while running a new business

Juggling the stress of starting a new business with finding talented tattoo artists and piercers was overwhelming for Serge and Red in the beginning. “Super, super stressful when you first start,” explains Serge. “You know, obviously, you’re thinking about all of these different things you’re going to need. You know, ‘Hey, where are we going to get people to work?’”

Like many small business owners, Serge and Red had limited hiring experience and no dedicated HR team. “When we initially started, we would just throw up some ads on various sites,” says Serge. “We had to start with something so we started using those.” But when posting jobs in different places online wasn’t working, he turned to Indeed to get his open roles in front of the millions of people that visit Indeed each month.

Indeed was the missing piece that helped move RedInk’s business forward. “We really saw the transition from where we were to where we wanted to go,” says Serge. “And that’s when we started to really use Indeed full time.”

With the goal of attracting and hiring diverse talent, Serge used matched candidates to immediately gain access to short lists of quality candidates whose resumes on Indeed fit his job descriptions. “Indeed has enabled us to see people all around the world that we normally wouldn’t be able to see,” explains Serge.

Using Indeed has allowed RedInk to build a diverse team. “We’ve discovered so many unique people on Indeed,” explains Serge. “We have a lot of people from different states that contact us.” In fact, RedInk hired four of their 10 tattooists and piercers through Indeed and they plan on hiring more.

“One would never think that a platform such as Indeed would cater to such a wide array of industries, such as a tattoo business,” says Serge. “When you think of ‘tattoo’ you think of ‘on the fringe,’ but we have found some amazing people through the Indeed platform.”
