Full job description
Role Summary
The Exhibit Technology Lead at Otherworld is a hands-on technical leader responsible for keeping our interactive exhibits safe, reliable, and engaging while leading the technical development and installation of new experiences. You will manage and schedule a team of 4–8 technicians, develop and document technical plans, program exhibit systems, lead installations and overhauls, and coordinate technical contractors. This role combines team leadership, project planning, programming, and advanced troubleshooting with daily responsibility for exhibit performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Management and Scheduling: Manage a team of 4–8 technicians. Build daily and weekly schedules that balance operating coverage, preventive maintenance, repairs, and installation work. Assign tasks, set priorities, track completion, provide feedback, and train team members to work safely and independently.
- Technical Planning for New Exhibits: Develop, write, and maintain technical plans for new installations, including system diagrams, wiring and network layouts, equipment specifications, bills of materials, labor estimates, installation schedules, and testing procedures. Work with creative, production, and operations teams to turn exhibit concepts into reliable, serviceable systems.
- Exhibit Programming: Program, configure, test, and deploy new interactive exhibits using tools such as TouchDesigner, Python, microcontrollers, and show-control systems. Integrate sensors, lighting, audio, video, and other interactive hardware. Document code and configurations, maintain backups and version history, and test startup, shutdown, and fault-recovery behavior.
- New Exhibit Installations: Lead the technical installation of new exhibits from equipment preparation through commissioning and opening. Direct technician work, coordinate installation sequences with other teams, integrate hardware and software, troubleshoot issues, verify performance, and deliver complete documentation and staff training.
- Documentation of Existing Exhibits: Inspect and document existing exhibit systems, including installations with incomplete or outdated records. Create and maintain accurate system diagrams, equipment inventories, cable and network maps, software and configuration records, operating instructions, troubleshooting guides, and preventive maintenance procedures. Update documentation after changes and repairs.
- Exhibit Overhauls and Upgrades: Lead major repairs, rebuilds, and technical overhauls of existing exhibits. Identify recurring failures and aging components, develop improvement plans, estimate materials and labor, schedule downtime with operations, and direct implementation. Test completed work and update documentation before returning exhibits to service.
- Contractor Coordination: Coordinate technical contractors and specialty vendors. Define scopes of work and deliverables, communicate technical requirements, align schedules and site access, and monitor progress and workmanship. Review completed work, resolve outstanding issues, and collect drawings, code, configuration files, and other handoff materials.
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Lead preventive maintenance and respond to exhibit outages. Diagnose complex problems across computers, networks, low-voltage electronics, controllers, lighting, projection, audio, and mechanical components. Find root causes, make durable repairs, and communicate exhibit status and recovery plans to operations.
- Project and Resource Tracking: Maintain work orders, repair logs, project schedules, parts inventories, and equipment records using tools such as Asana. Track material and labor needs, flag purchasing requirements and schedule risks, and keep the Tech Dock, tools, and spare parts organized.
- Safety and Quality: Enforce company safety procedures and quality standards. Verify that installations and repairs are secure, accessible for maintenance, and ready for guest use. Coordinate specialized work with appropriately qualified personnel and maintain clean, organized work areas.
Required Qualifications
- Technical Experience: Demonstrated professional experience maintaining, installing, or developing interactive exhibits, audiovisual systems, entertainment technology, or comparable integrated technical systems. Ability to independently diagnose complex failures and complete reliable repairs.
- Leadership: Experience supervising or leading technicians, creating schedules, assigning work, training staff, and managing competing maintenance and project priorities.
- Programming and Integration: Practical ability to create, modify, debug, and deploy interactive software or control logic. Working proficiency with tools such as TouchDesigner and Python, and experience connecting software to sensors, controllers, lighting, or audiovisual hardware.
- Planning and Documentation: Ability to develop clear technical plans, interpret wiring diagrams and drawings, and write usable installation instructions, operating procedures, and troubleshooting documentation.
- Systems and Hands-on Skills: Strong troubleshooting skills in computer hardware, networking, low-voltage wiring, and audiovisual equipment. Proficiency with hand and power tools, cable termination, soldering, and secure equipment installation.
- Project Coordination: Ability to plan and lead installations or major repairs, coordinate contractors and other departments, and communicate scope, progress, risks, and technical needs clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in immersive art, museums, themed entertainment, theatrical production, or other public interactive environments.
- Familiarity with Git, VS Code, Arduino IDE, remote access tools, and Windows, macOS, or Linux; experience with additional languages or platforms such as C, C++, C#, or Unity.
- Experience with LED control, show-control protocols, circuit design, fabrication, CNC equipment, 3D printing, carpentry, metalwork, or rigging.
- Current training or certifications for scissor lifts, boom lifts, forklifts, or other relevant equipment.
Work Requirements
- Ability to perform hands-on installation and maintenance tasks, move through immersive exhibit spaces, and lift or maneuver materials up to 50 pounds, with reasonable accommodation as applicable.
- Ability to work safely on ladders, lifts, and elevated platforms with appropriate training and equipment.
- Availability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required by exhibit operations, installations, and maintenance schedules.
Why Join Otherworld
Help build and maintain immersive experiences that bring art and technology together. You will lead a technical team, collaborate with artists and fabricators, and take projects from initial planning through installation and long-term operation.
