Traveling Construction Manager 80k to 100k not counting per-diem

Department: Operations
Reports To: Director of Operations / Director of Special Projects
Location: Travel Required (75–100%)

Position SummaryThe Traveling Construction Manager is responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing telecommunications construction projects across multiple states. This position ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with customer specifications, company standards, and regulatory requirements. The Construction Manager serves as the primary point of contact between USG, customers, subcontractors, utility owners, and government agencies while providing leadership to field personnel.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProject Management

  • Manage multiple fiber optic construction projects simultaneously throughout assigned regions.
  • Develop project schedules and allocate labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Monitor production goals, budgets, and project profitability.
  • Coordinate project startup, execution, and closeout activities.
  • Identify project risks and implement corrective actions to maintain schedules.

Field Operations

  • Conduct routine jobsite inspections to ensure quality and productivity.
  • Supervise in-house crews and subcontractors performing:
  • Directional drilling
  • Trenching
  • Aerial strand and fiber installation
  • Fiber splicing
  • Restoration
  • Verify work is completed according to construction drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Ensure daily production reports, bore logs, as-built documentation, and closeout packages are completed accurately.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and enforce USG's safety policies and OSHA standards.
  • Conduct safety meetings and jobsite audits.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Coordinate utility locates, traffic control, and permitting requirements.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.

Customer Relations

  • Serve as the primary customer contact throughout project execution.
  • Attend customer meetings, progress reviews, and field inspections.
  • Communicate project status, schedule updates, and potential risks.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and efficiently.

Financial Management

  • Review labor, equipment, and material costs.
  • Approve subcontractor invoices and production quantities.
  • Identify and prepare change orders when additional work is required.
  • Assist with project billing by verifying completed work quantities.
  • Monitor project budgets and recommend cost-saving measures.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop field supervisors and crew members.
  • Assist in hiring, training, and evaluating employees.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and professional development.
  • Coordinate resources between multiple active projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of telecommunications or utility construction management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • Fiber optic construction
  • Directional drilling
  • Aerial fiber installation
  • Underground utility construction
  • Fiber splicing operations
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, utility prints, and construction drawings.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and multiple construction crews.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with major telecommunications providers such as Segra, AT&T, Windstream, Brightspeed, or similar carriers.
  • Experience with permitting agencies including DOT, municipalities, and utility companies.
  • Knowledge of project management software Smart Sheets/ Field wire and GIS/KMZ mapping.
  • OSHA 30 Certification.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • CDL (preferred but not required).

Travel Requirements

  • Ability to travel extensively throughout assigned regions (75–100%).
  • Overnight travel required.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and emergency response situations as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk active construction sites over uneven terrain.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Climb ladders and access aerial work areas when necessary.
