Like a civilian firefighter, a U.S. Army firefighter responds to fire emergencies to defend lives and property. In addition, they have many more responsibilities during their daily work. These additional duties include fire hazard inspections, managing wildfires, providing emergency first aid to injured people and responding to hazardous materials incidents. U.S. Army firefighters usually maintain their department's records for any incidents.

In addition, U.S. Army firefighters might sometimes conduct rescue and salvage operations or controlled burns. They usually know how to drive emergency response vehicles or direct them in an emergency. They may also be expected to know how to perform maintenance on their vehicles or equipment. U.S. Army firefighters may teach fire protection skills to non-firefighter U.S. Army personnel or support civilian fire departments.
