Type of Job: Exempt/Full-Time

Location: Anchorage, Alaska

Salary: DOE: $150,000-$250,000

Mass Excavation, Inc. (Mass X), a leader in heavy civil and site development construction, is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Construction Superintendent to oversee field operations on complex sitework and earthwork projects. This role is critical to ensure that our projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The Superintendent will serve as the primary on-site leader, coordinating all field operations, managing crews and subcontractors, and acting as the key liaison between the field and project management teams.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and highly motivated Heavy Civil Construction Superintendent to lead the successful execution of large-scale infrastructure and site development projects. This role is responsible for ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The Superintendent serves as the primary on-site leader, coordinating field operations, managing crews and subcontractors, and acting as the key liaison between the field and project management teams.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Execution

· Plan and coordinate construction activities in collaboration with the Estimator, Project Manager, and Project Engineers.

· Direct and oversee all phases of heavy civil construction, including earthwork, grading, utilities, concrete structures, paving, and related scopes.

· Lead daily site operations to ensure efficiency, safety, and compliance with project specifications and regulatory requirements.

· Develop, maintain, and adjust project schedules to meet milestones and deadlines.

· Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to optimize productivity and minimize downtime.

· Ensure materials, supplies, and tools are ordered and scheduled to prevent delays.

· Assist the Project Manager with monthly cost-to-complete and revenue forecasts.

Team & Subcontractor Management

· Supervise and mentor field crews, engineers, support staff, and subcontractors, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork.

· Monitor subcontractor performance to ensure adherence to quality standards, timelines, and contractual obligations.

· Conduct daily briefings and weekly coordination meetings to align stakeholders on project goals and progress.

Safety & Compliance

· Enforce OSHA/MSHA regulations, company safety policies, and environmental requirements.

· Conduct regular safety inspections, hazard assessments, and toolbox talks.

· Promptly address and document safety concerns or incidents.

Quality Control & Documentation

· Review and interpret plans, specifications, shop drawings, and subcontract requirements to ensure accurate execution.

· Monitor workmanship and materials to maintain quality standards.

· Maintain accurate daily logs documenting production, delays, conflicts, safety compliance, environmental matters, and owner or subcontractor interactions.

Problem-Solving & Communication

· Identify potential issues early and implement proactive solutions to avoid delays or cost overruns.

· Serve as the primary point of contact for field-related questions, changes, and conflict resolution.

· Collaborate with project managers, engineers, inspectors, and clients to ensure alignment and transparency.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

· Must be able to withstand all weather conditions and temperatures

Qualifications

· Required: Active Local 302 membership.

· Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 3 years in superintendent or senior foreman role.

· Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a driving record report.

· Willingness to travel to various job sites as needed.

· Strong technical knowledge of civil construction methods, materials, and equipment.

· Proven ability to read, understand, and interpret complex construction plans, surveying, cost controls, scheduling, and production tracking.

· Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to manage, communicate, and organize multiple crews and subcontractors.

· OSHA 30 certification strongly preferred: additional safety training a plus.

· Commitment to high standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.

Contingencies

Offer contingent upon ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and motor vehicle report.
