The Accountant is responsible for applying principles of cost accounting to conduct financial analysis which provide detailed information to the President to assure full visibility of the financial performance of the UWSA to the President and Board of Directors. This position will plan for, collect and study the appropriate data to determine the costs of business activities to the UWSA and prepare reports to inform the President and the Board regarding the key financial indicators and trends that measure the success of the organization. This position will report to the President and will concentrate on the accurate and timely information needed for decision making by governing representatives, finance and audit committees, and staff members. This job description reflects the President’s assignment of essential functions. It does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Active member of the Finance, Endowment, Campaign, and Emergency Food & Shelter Committees.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual report for United Way.
  • Assists in the review of the accounts, subsidiary journals, and other supporting documents for the United Way, SECA campaigns, donor designation distributions, Family Resource Center, the United Way operating fund, and for all related funds which comprise the Financial Statements of the United Way.
  • Assists and works with the accounting firm engaged by UWSA to maintain proper recordkeeping annually and with the annual review of UWSA and Dept. of Agriculture audit and with other required financial documentation.
  • Collaborates with the Campaign Committee to plan, organize and manage the annual fundraising campaign.
  • Assists with grants budgeting and corporate surveys for campaign funds.
  • Creates progress reports and updates for Finance Committee, Board of Directors, and Campaign Committee.
  • Develop and implement procedures to maximize collection of the pledge receivables. (Collection Procedures)
  • Develop and prepare, in conjunction with the Finance and Audit Committee, the annual budget.
  • Develop spreadsheets or documents to enhance financial management and analysis.
  • Distributes monthly allocations to our Partner Agencies.
  • Effectively utilize accounting software. Maximize the reporting and analytical abilities. (MIP Webinars)
  • Ensures bimonthly cost center reports are prepared and distributed for each program to the Finance Committee and approved by the Board.
  • Generates timely and accurate periodic and year-end financial reports for all funds.
  • Maintain and reconcile bank, endowment, reserve fund statements, and signature cards.
  • Maintain records of all fixed assets, allocations, checks, and electronic funds transfers.
  • Manages and assures the fund distribution process, follows guidelines set forth in the bylaws and policies of UWSA and in the Partner Agency Member Offer of Affiliation. (Review Policies)
  • Participates and assists in events, including kick off and Power of the Purse.
  • Performs accounting functions for efficient collecting, processing and tracking of pledges with accounting software.
  • Preparation for, coordination of, and conduct the annual audits of all United Way and grant program entities
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, related schedules, including investment accounts, and be able to analyze and communicate any variances.
  • Process and pay UWSA bills on a bimonthly or as needed basis.
  • Process Food Pantry and equipment payments to vendors on a bimonthly or as needed basis.

· Provides support to staff and backup on information and referral calls.

  • Report, analyze and disburse donor designation on a quarterly basis.
  • Reviews the financial information of UWSA including review of bimonthly payroll journal entry.
  • Tracks grant actual expenses on grant fiscal years. Processes grant journal entries, and final grant reporting.

Education and Experience:

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and 8+ years of experience in the Accounting field required or commensurate experience. Must be able to analyze financial data, make recommendations and implement improvements to operating processes. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Strong organizational and time management skills needed. Must have knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software. Must work comfortably with Partner Agencies, Board Members and the community at large. Required to represent UWSA using honesty and integrity.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $55,000.00 - $59,000.00 per year
