Advocate Coach Job Description
Mesilla Valley CASA

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Advocate Coach provides supervision and support to CASA volunteers, ensuring that children and youth involved with the CASA program receive sound advocacy and early permanency planning. The Advocate Coach is responsible for all aspects of coaching and coordination of volunteer advocate cases. Some training and activities occur on evenings and weekends.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the recruiting, screening, and interviewing of new volunteers.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for prospective Volunteer Advocates, providing timely and professional responses.
  • Document all correspondence related to the applicant’s interview, reference checks, and next steps with the CASA program.
  • Facilitate Pre-Service training and In-Service training to groups of volunteers from 5-40 participants, utilizing a variety of training delivery methods, including printed materials, PowerPoint, videos, and case simulations. Pre-service training is held during evening and weekend sessions, outside of the normal work-week.
  • Facilitate training for volunteer mentors serving young people ages 18+.
  • Provide coaching and supervision for volunteer advocates and mentors on an ongoing basis, including identifying volunteers’ strengths and areas that need improvement.
  • Assign, prepare, and distribute case documentation.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality, pursuant to New Mexico Children’s Code 32(A).
  • Assist in data collection, management, and reporting for grant tracking purposes.
  • Maintain case files and volunteer files in office and in Optima.
  • Review and edit court reports submitted by volunteers, ensuring each report is fact-based, professional, and timely.
  • Participate in court hearings and court-ordered meetings, taking notes for documentation.
  • Serve as an advocate for children and youth involved in the child welfare system.
  • Serve as a court appointed Educational Decision Maker as needed.
  • Attend relevant trainings and conferences, both locally, throughout New Mexico, and occasionally out of state.
  • Participate in community-wide committees and coalitions, representing Mesilla Valley CASA and the broader child welfare community.
  • Assist in outreach and recruitment by attending community events. Must be able to set
  • Build and maintain relationships and engage in networking opportunities with local businesses, organizations, chambers of commerce, and community leaders to expand CASA’s network and volunteer base.
  • Assist in planning and executing fundraising and awareness events to support CASA’s mission.
  • Assist in planning and executing special events such as Foster Parent Appreciation, Adoption Day Celebration, Volunteer Appreciation, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to advance CASA’s mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social service-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups in various settings.
  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and ability to anticipate challenges.
  • Outgoing, social, and engaging personality with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required by training sessions and other activities.
  • High level of discretion and sensitivity when handling confidential information related to applicants and Volunteer Advocates.
  • Must be comfortable facilitating groups of volunteers in adult education settings and teaching training materials.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Child Welfare System, including the dynamics of child abuse and neglect and contributing factors, including but not limited to, mental health, substance use, criminal history, domestic violence, etc.
  • Must be accepting and supportive of children, families, and volunteers, regardless of disability, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
  • Compassion for both adults and children who have experienced trauma.
  • Ability to address complex issues with tact.
  • Proficient computer skills including Google Workspace and Canva.
  • Must have a cell phone compatible with Google Voice.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License, reliable vehicle, and proof of auto insurance.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Advocate Coach reports directly to the Program Director, who is responsible for their performance evaluations.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must participate in background checks at the local, state, and national level, including a child protective services check and a sexual offender registry check. Prior involvement with the child welfare or criminal justice system does not automatically disqualify an applicant.
  • Must provide a writing sample (a cover letter expressing interest in and qualifications for this position will suffice).
  • Must provide three professional references.
  • Complete an employment and social history interview (the same process used for CASA volunteers).

PAY & BENEFITS:

  • Pay range: $20-$22 per hour, based on education and experience
