Backfiller Operator
St. Paul Utilities and Excavating, Inc.
Position Summary
St. Paul Utilities and Excavating, Inc. is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Backfiller Operator to support underground utility installation projects. This role is responsible for properly backfilling trenches, compacting materials, and assisting in the restoration of project sites while working closely with pipe crews, foremen, and other equipment operators. The Backfiller Operator plays a critical role in ensuring trench integrity, site safety, and quality project completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate backfilling equipment including loaders, skid steers, dozers, excavators, and compactors
- Backfill trenches according to project specifications, ensuring proper lift thickness and compaction
- Coordinate with pipelayers and foremen to ensure proper timing and sequencing of backfill operations
- Perform proper compaction using jumping jacks, plate compactors, or rollers as required
- Maintain awareness of underground utilities and ensure safe operation around live systems
- Assist with grading and site restoration to meet project and municipal requirements
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic maintenance (fueling, greasing, cleaning)
- Follow all OSHA and company safety protocols at all times
- Support general labor tasks as needed to assist the crew
Qualifications
- Experience operating construction equipment in utility or excavation work
- Knowledge of trenching, backfill materials, and compaction methods
- Ability to read grade stakes and follow site plans is a plus
- Strong understanding of job site safety practices
- Valid driver’s license required (CDL preferred but not required)
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Reliable, team-oriented, and able to take direction
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly
- Ability to climb in and out of equipment multiple times per day
- Comfortable working on uneven terrain and in trenches
- Capable of long hours standing, walking, and operating machinery
Work Environment
- Outdoor construction sites across the Twin Cities metro and surrounding areas
- Exposure to weather conditions, noise, dust, and heavy equipment
- Fast-paced, team-oriented crew environment

Pay: $45.00 - $50.00 per hour
