ABOUT THE ROLE
The Developmental Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing individualized skill-building programs to support consumers in achieving greater independence. This role also serves as a Service Manager for assigned individuals, ensuring coordination of services, regulatory compliance, and advocacy for consumer needs.
This is a hands-on role that blends direct service, program development, and case management in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct Care & Skill Development
- Assess consumer skill levels and identify areas for growth to develop individualized training programs (DHSPs/IPs).
- Implement and oversee skill-building programs in both program and community settings.
- Assist consumers with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including lifting, feeding, and personal care, as needed.
- Develop teaching materials and strategies to support learning and engagement.
- Support and participate in community and volunteer outings.
- Provide transportation using personal or company vehicles, as applicable.
Service Management & Consumer Advocacy
- Serve as Service Manager/Case Manager for assigned consumers.
- Maintain all required consumer records, including Permanent and Work Records.
- Coordinate and participate in Individualized Team (IDT) meetings and reviews.
- Advocate for appropriate services and supports, including Human Rights protections.
- Monitor and update DHSPs/IPs to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Behavioral & Medical Support
- Implement behavior support plans and collect data as required.
- Respond to and document behavioral or medical emergencies, including physical interventions when necessary.
- Collaborate with consultants and clinical staff to monitor progress and adjust supports.
Documentation, Compliance & Quality
- Complete all required documentation (daily, monthly, and periodic reports) accurately and on time.
- Ensure compliance with all state regulations and organizational standards.
- Report any suspected abuse or neglect immediately in accordance with policy.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance and adhere to program schedules.
Team Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with staff, supervisors, families, and external partners.
- Maintain open communication with leadership regarding consumer needs and program concerns.
- Participate in all required meetings, trainings, and program activities.
- Assist with training and orientation of new staff, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent (minimum requirement per state regulations).
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field strongly preferred.
Experience
- Experience in human services or a related field required.
- Prior experience with case management and consumer reviews strongly preferred.
Skills & Requirements
- Valid MA driver’s license with a motor vehicle record that meets insurance requirements.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; bilingual skills preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple consumers in a structured or community-based setting.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, exercise sound judgment, and problem-solve effectively.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and positive working relationships with all stakeholders.
- Ability to complete delegated nursing-related tasks as assigned by an RN or Health Care Supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to assist consumers with ambulation, wheelchair transfers, and lifting up to 60 pounds.
- Ability to respond to behavioral and medical emergencies, including physical intervention.
- Work includes both indoor program settings and outdoor/community-based activities.
- Exposure to typical program-related noise levels and environments.
SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
- Follow all Baroco safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and fire and safety regulations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner and report safety concerns immediately.
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or unlawful conduct immediately in accordance with policy.
