Explorit Science Center seeks a visionary Executive Director!
Join our team and make a meaningful impact by advancing scientific literacy and inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.
About Us:
Explorit Science Center is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 and located in Davis, California. Explorit is in the process of reimagining our 40-year quest going forward: to support curiosity in young learners through hands-on experiences. We are developing a nimble and community-focused Science and Education Hub that can support a dynamic ‘makerspace’ as well as community education programs with our non-profit partners. We will offer hands-on experiences in the natural sciences, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). Although we are restructuring our vision, our mission "to ignite and foster curiosity about science and nature through inquiry and discovery” remains the same.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a visionary Executive Director who can navigate the intersection between hands-on educational programming and the power to support creativity in a community centered maker space. The Executive Director will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization and for the achievement of major strategic objectives. As the Executive Director of Explorit, you will be responsible for working with the Board of Trustees to implement our strategic plan, fundraise, and operational management; to work with educators on program development; and to support and engage with stakeholders and our community partners to champion our cause of re-imagining Explorit.
The ideal candidate will commit to work 32 to 40 hours per week. The position is ideally full time and requires being onsite for the majority of time.
Salary:
$70,000 to $75,000 + Benefits (additional compensation negotiated based on fundraising)
Benefits:
Health Insurance, Sick Leave, Vacation, and Holiday Pay

Implement a 3-year Work Plan and an annual funds development plan, including government/grant opportunities, major donor, and foundation support.
- Financial Management (10%): Oversee budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation, ensuring financial sustainability and effective utilization of resources. Work closely with the Board of Trustee’s Treasurer as the board liaison and provide updated financial reports.
- Fundraising, Development and Stakeholder Engagement (40%): Grow and diversify the resources of the organization by developing, cultivating, and deepening relationships with major donors, philanthropic funders, corporate sponsors, and community partners. Develop and implement fundraising campaigns and events to secure funding for ongoing programs and new initiatives. From the financial and program reports develop the Annual Report for the Board of Trustees, our stakeholders, and for public engagement.
- Program Development and Implementation (20%): Drive the development and execution of innovative programs, events, and initiatives that promote scientific education and public engagement. Hire temporary, limited positions, initially to help provide and develop these programs in collaboration with the Board of Trustees. Develop and present reports on programs provided and those served.
- Operations and Management (10%): Maintain clear and transparent communication with the Board of Trustees. Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, prepare progress reports, and attend Board and additional meetings as needed. Collaborate with the Board to recruit, build, and retain a strong staff to meet Explorit's developing needs. Provide strong leadership to this emerging and dynamic team, fostering a positive work culture, professional growth, and ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.
