Chabot Space & Science Center is a non-profit science center and observatory dedicated to inspiring and educating learners of all ages about the Universe and planet Earth. Chabot’s mission is to spark and engage curiosity, deepen access and inclusion within science education, and provide opportunity for pathways into careers in the sciences.
Situated on a beautiful 13-acre campus nestled in the redwoods of Oakland’s regional parks, Chabot Space & Science Center includes immersive exhibits, hands-on learning activities, science festivals, a state of the art planetarium, and is home to the official NASA Ames Visitor Center. Chabot’s research-level astronomical observatory, featuring three large scale telescopes, is the largest observatory complex free for regular public viewing in the Western United States.

Facilities Technician II Job Summary:
The Facilities Technician II is a mid-level position within the facilities team. This role involves a broad range of maintenance, repair, and operational support tasks to help ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the organization’s facilities. The Facilities Technician II works both independently and collaboratively to address maintenance needs, complete work orders, and support facility improvement efforts. This position reports to the Operations Director. This job description outlines the primary responsibilities of the position; additional duties may be assigned as needed. This position is a Monday- Friday Full-Time, Benefits eligible role.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Facility Maintenance:
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair common issues and escalate more complex problems as appropriate.
- Coordinate with vendors and contractors under the direction of management.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintain and repair facility equipment such as generators, pumps, motors, and other machinery.
- Conduct regular inspections to ensure equipment remains in safe working condition.
Facility Inspections:
- Assist with regular inspections to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns.
- Document findings and communicate recommended corrective actions.
Repairs and Work Orders:
- Respond to service requests and work orders in a timely manner.
- Diagnose and complete repairs safely and efficiently.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow established safety procedures and protocols.
- Identify potential hazards and report concerns to management.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
Project Support:
- Support facility improvement projects, renovations, and installations as assigned.
- Assist with setup, coordination, and follow-through under supervision.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and inspections.
- Update work order systems and equipment logs as required.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Working knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with general safety standards and build maintenance practices.
- Ability to read technical manuals and basic schematics.
- Proficient in using hand and power tools.
- Good organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently with general supervision
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Vocational or technical certifications are a plus.
- 2-4 years of experience in facilities maintenance or a related field preferred.
