Job Description - Corrections Officer

This position requires a thorough knowledge of Corrections in jail procedures. The detention officer is responsible for maintaining facility Security, operation of the jail security doors, maintaining records, handling inmates, answering of the inmate intercom and Department telephones, all meal preparation for inmates housed in the Ozark County jail and providing services including laundry, medical, commissary to inmates. Detention officers escort inmates to and from Court proceedings, and other detention facilities. This position has been identified with possible risks of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and or other various hazards where immunizations against such exposure are recommended.

Officer's duties include the following:

  • Operating security doors.
  • Answering telephones. Preparing reports, affidavits, citations and other documentation is required.
  • Maintaining prisoner records i.e. Go game, release, commitment papers, inmate files, etc.
  • Entry and removal of computer information.
  • Apprehending criminal and traffic law offenders.
  • Transporting and escorting detainees to and from court, and involuntary psychiatric commitments to healthcare facilities.
  • Monitor video and camera security systems and check incoming inmate mail and redirect as required.
  • Checks and receives bonds and bond monies and approves all receipts and releases of prisoners.
  • Handle violent inmates to include physical confrontation.
  • Handle intoxicated and or prisoners under influence of drugs or other substances.
  • Handle mentally ill prisoners.
  • Prepare meals for inmates.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned or as apparent.
  • Maintain safety and security of facility.
  • Keep track of inmate movement.

Correctional Officer Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED or appropriate equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Ability to use a computer and complete the Missouri 40 hour jail officer training program within one year of employment.
  • Completion of background investigation, fingerprint and or polygraph examination, to establish whether the candidate is of good moral character and emotionally stable, as required.
  • Available to work with little or no notice.
  • Available to work shifts, over weekends, on public holidays and during inclement weather.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, run, jump, Bend, twist and stretch in order to function and ever-changing environmental situations.

Pay: $10.00 - $12.00 per hour
