Mechanical Design Engineer/CAD Drafter

Full Job Description:

A local Shelby NC manufacturer of bakery machinery for the snack food industry is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer/CAD Drafter to join our team. In the role of design engineer/drafter you will implement new designs and maintain current designs required to manufacture MBD machinery. The right candidate will create and modify designs using CAD software to produce quick and accurate drawings and models, delivering projects and jobs on time. This position involves translating order requirements into drawing packages, bills of material and production orders. You will be responsible for equipment layouts, 3D models, detail part drawings, assembly drawings, sketches, and diagrams. You will work closely with the engineering team, sales team, and management, to contribute to the creation of advanced products and systems.

Every part of MB&D’s machinery is designed and built completely in-house starting from the design of the mechanical and electrical aspects of the equipment. The experienced machine fabricators, machinists, CNC operators, and assembly team deliver products to our customers which include domestic and international, large companies in the snack food industry.

Duties / Responsibilities:

Overall, the Design Engineer/CAD Drafter performs a variety of tasks as an important player in the Mechanical Engineering department at MBD, including:

  • Perform detailed mechanical design work for machinery using (3D) SolidWorks and (2D) AutoCAD, Drag sight, Cadmax.
  • Generate conceptual design sketches drawings.
  • Produce new detailed drawings that include manufacturing dimensions, required materials and assembly components for customer specific jobs.
  • Edit existing CAD drawings.
  • Create/Edit Bill of Materials
  • Release orders to manufacturing for customer jobs.
  • Part of the R&D team for testing new designs and technology or improving existing ones.
  • Consult with engineering team on design and layouts.
  • Meet and communicate regularly with management and sales departments, to discuss project scopes and ensure alignment of priorities with timely flow of information.
  • Supports and assists assembly/manufacturing efforts as needed.
  • Occasionally be willing to be hands on with assembly building or manufacturing.

  • Strong mechanical ability and knowledge base in mechanical design
  • Understand engineering principles, technical aspects, limitations of materials and components, and apply them to designs appropriately.
  • Self-motivated, creative, independent problem solver and able to work in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organization, computer skills, communication, and strong work ethic.
  • Positive attitude and desire to learn.

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Bachelors (BS) in Engineering, Engineering technology, Mechanical Drafting technology (preferred)
  • Candidates with equivalent job experience will also be considered.
  • 2+ years related experience and/or training is preferred.
  • Experience with SolidWorks 3D: 2+ years preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other 2D CAD software: 2 years preferred.
  • Experience in detailed shop drawings for machined components and/or welded fabrication
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
