Position Summary:
Under guidance and daily supervision, a Chemist I supports formula development for personal care products by formulating simple products, executing routine lab tests, documenting results with Good Documentation Practices (GDP), and collaborating with senior chemists on customer projects. The role operates within ISO 22716/cGMP expectations and helps maintain a safe, organized, and audit-ready laboratory environment in our Scottsdale facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Formulate simple products under supervision, following written formulas/SOPs; prepare lab-scale batches and adjust as directed.
· Conduct and document lab tests (e.g., pH, viscosity, appearance, stability pulls) and generate basic specifications per protocols.
· Document formulas, raw-material lots, observations, and results using GDP in lab notebooks and/or LIMS; maintain traceable records.
· Understand raw materials and basic formulation principles; research technical literature and vendor data sheets to support formulation choices.
· Support senior chemists on customer projects, including sample preparation, filling/labeling, coding, COAs, and shipment requests.
· Prepare and manage stability studies: label, place, and monitor samples at required conditions; record OOT observations and escalate promptly.
· Assist with pilot batch/scale-up activities in collaboration with Operations and Quality; participate in line trials as needed.
· Maintain laboratory readiness: calibrate basic instruments (balances, pH meters, viscometers), clean/sanitize equipment, manage inventory, and observe 5S/housekeeping standards.
· Adhere to EHS requirements (Cal/OSHA), chemical handling and waste disposal procedures, and use appropriate PPE at all times.
· Perform other duties and project tasks as assigned.
Qualifications (Required):
· Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related scientific discipline; or equivalent practical experience.
· 0–2 years of laboratory or formulation experience (internships and relevant coursework considered).
· Foundational knowledge of emulsions, surfactants, and rheology; ability to follow SOPs and written formulas.
· Competence with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace; ability to learn LIMS/ERP systems.
· Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management; effective verbal/written communication.
Preferred
· Hands-on experience in personal care/cosmetics, food, or pharmaceutical product development.
· Familiarity with ISO 22716/cGMP, stability testing design, and basic metrology (balances, pH, viscosity).
Competencies
· Quality & safety mindset; ownership of housekeeping and compliance.
· Teamwork and collaboration; seeks feedback and asks clarifying questions.
· Problem solving; uses data and observations to recommend next steps.
Physical Requirements
· Regularly stand, walk, reach, and handle materials; lift/pull/push up to 35 lbs.; occasional ladder/step‑stool use.
· Frequent use of PPE (lab coat, gloves, goggles); exposure to fragrances, solvents (e.g., ethanol, IPA), and temperature‑controlled stability chambers.
· Ability to work onsite at the Hayward facility; occasional overtime or weekend work based on project needs.
Schedule & Employment
· Day shift, Monday–Friday (or as scheduled).
