Position Description: City of District Heights

Title: Senior Center Director

Department: General Government

Summary Description

Plans, organizes and coordinates a multi-service program designed to promote psychological, educational, cultural, physical and social needs of Senior Citizens. Will supervise and coordinate all Senior Center programs, staff, volunteers and facilities.

Examples of Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Researches, develops, plans, and coordinates senior citizen programs with resources, procedures, and services to meet the diverse needs of the senior population.

2. Initiates, plans, presents and evaluates educational and social programs for the senior population.

3. Provides and coordinates a hot meal program as directed by Prince George’s County Department of Family Services.

4. Provides information and referral services to older adults, caregivers, and families about services and programs available for older adults.

5. Interfaces with and coordinates programs for the Center with the Prince George’s County Department of Family Services, Aging Division, Prince George’s County Health Department, Prince George’s Community College and other health care facilities.

6. Coordinates transportation services for District Heights residents 55 and older for transportation to Center, medical appointments, shopping, and excursions.

7. Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates Center staff including the recruitment and training of volunteer workers and instructors.

8. Supervises all full and part-time employees at the Center as well as volunteers.9. Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures.10. Investigate and research funding opportunities for the Center including grants, prepares and processes application forms, prepare appropriate reports as to the use of the grant award as necessary.

11. Handles all financial matters related to the Center operations and maintains all records regarding programming, attendance, incident, maintenance, and others as needed.

12. Participates in the development and administration of assigned program budget, forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies and monitor and approve expenditures.

13. Respond to and resolve disputes between seniors, volunteers, staff, and partnering agencies as needed.

14. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a management related field
  • Five (5) years of experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated skill and ability to work well with senior citizens and able to understand their needs, interests, and activities.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the principles and practices needed to effectively administer senior programs.
  • Ability to effectively relate to a variety of people, particularly the elderly, and to encourage their participation in Senior Center activities.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn federal, state and regional programs available to the elderly.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, psychological, social and health needs of the elderly.
  • Ability to prepare effective narrative and statistical reports.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
  • Ability to administer an office and budget.
  • Ability to use computer software for daily reporting and other material.
  • Ability to set policies and procedures.

Physical Demands Required to speak, hear, walk, sit, stand, bend, stoop, or crouch. Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds. Ability to routinely use hands, fingers and wrists for repetitive motion, to handle and/or feel equipment, objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to climb stairs or ladders to various levels.

Specific vision required for this job include close vision and ability to focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. The employee must be able to hear normal sounds with the presence of background noise.

The employee must be able to work harmoniously, cooperatively and courteously with others at all times. The employee must be able to interact with people who are under physical and emotional stress as well as the ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful and emergency situations. The employee must be able to respond to difficult situations, ease tension and address disturbances.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to employment.

Documentation of vaccination for COVID-19 as well as all booster shots are a requirement of employment.
