MiGen Michigan LGBTQ+ Elders Network is Michigan’s only nonprofit dedicated to services and advocacy for LGBTQ+ maturing and older adults, their loved ones and caregivers. Position Description:

This position is responsible for providing counseling regarding the State Health Insurance Assistance Program and Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (SHIP/MIPPA) to help clients make informed decisions regarding the various healthcare programs available. It is also responsible for providing training, supervision, and administrative oversight to SHIP/MIPPA volunteer counselors and partners with guidance from the No Wrong Door Director and support from the Volunteer and executive Coordinator. Though MiGen staff work a hybrid and flexible model, this position may require occasional evening and weekend hours based upon client needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete training related to the SHIP/MIPPA program, cross train in Person Centered Options Counseling (PCOC)
  • Train volunteers and partners to provide counseling options as it relates to SHIP/MIPPA
  • Provide unbiased support to clients navigating Medicare decisions
  • Assist with enrollment, plan reviews, and provide education to clients regarding their Medicare options
  • Assign clients to volunteers and partners for counseling
  • Ensure volunteer counselors and partners are completing counseling and related documentation in a timely and complete manner
  • Provide community presentations regarding Medicare options and low-income programs

Requirements and Characteristics:

  • At least 2 years experience in progressively more responsible program implementation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the various Medicare/Medicaid programs preferred
  • Experience and comfort with data systems and reporting
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with and supporting LGBTQ+ communities
  • A collaborative spirit focused on trial and error and trying new things
  • Volunteer management experience as well as the experience implementing training programs
  • Takes ownership and initiative and demonstrates follow-through
  • Demonstrated experience working remotely
  • Celebrates achievement through doing and achieving quantitative and qualitative results
  • May need to travel and have the ability to perform work in person on a flexible basis as needed at partner locations

Compensation: This is a Band I, exempt position with a salary range of $37-52k annually. Candidates should anticipate offers closer to the beginning range amount; additionally, full time employees also receive up to 20% of their salary to apply toward benefits.

Supervision: The SHIP/MIPPA Coordinator is a full-time position and is supervised by the No Wrong Door Director.
