Part-Time Veterinary Assistant (VA) - Evenings & Weekends

Part-Time - 15 to 25 hours/week - Weekday evenings (2 to 10 PM) & weekends (9 AM to 7 PM)

Looking for a flexible, meaningful way to add hours to your week? Want to be part of a veterinary team that actually respects your time, without locking you into a 40-hour grind? Whether you are a seasoned vet professional who wants to keep your hands in patient care a few shifts a month, or someone looking for a second job that is genuinely energizing instead of exhausting, we would love to meet you.

As a veterinarian, I have watched too many great people leave the field, or avoid extra shifts, because the pace and culture made it unsustainable. I built Transcend Veterinary to create something better: a workplace where people are treated with respect, where team members can support each other, and where the work feels sustainable again.

Who We Are

At Transcend Veterinary, our mission is to serve our community by increasing access to veterinary care starting with dedicated urgent care services. In an area where general practices are often overwhelmed and emergency hospitals struggle with excessive caseloads, we provide a much-needed alternative. By offering timely care, we not only support pet owners but also serve as a relief valve for local clinics, easing their workload and helping prevent burnout.

Just as importantly, we are creating a workplace where veterinary professionals and staff can thrive by reigniting their passion in the field. We know that fulfillment comes from being empowered to innovate, explore new ideas, and contribute in ways that truly inspire you. That is why we are building an environment that values open communication, respects different perspectives, and supports well-being rather than draining it. At Transcend, we encourage you to take control of your job, your career, and shape it into something that brings you joy and purpose.

And we are not stopping there. We aim to set an example for the industry, proving that a better way is possible. Through our success, we hope to inspire change, share our model, and show the veterinary world what is possible when professionals are put first. Our urgent care clinic is more than just a service, it is a mission-driven effort to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

About the Role

As a part-time Veterinary Assistant with Transcend Veterinary, you will do more than just assist with patient care. You will be a core part of how our evening and weekend team runs. Our small shift teams mean assistants are trusted with real responsibility, and your hands-on support keeps our CVTs and doctors at their best.

This role is ideal for experienced veterinary assistants looking to pick up additional shifts outside a primary position, pre-vet or vet-tech students seeking high-quality urgent-care exposure, or candidates looking to break into veterinary medicine through a flexible schedule. Because coverage on evenings and weekends is tight, we are prioritizing candidates who can hit the ground running with minimal ramp-up.

Schedule & Hours

This is a part-time role built specifically to cover our evening and weekend shifts. We are looking for team members who actively want these hours, whether to supplement another job, balance family schedules, or stay engaged in patient care without a full-time commitment.

· Hours per week: Flexible. 15 to 25 hours per week, with scheduling built around your availability. Pick up as few or as many shifts as you want within that range.

· Weekday evenings: Shifts generally fall within a 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM window.

· Weekends: Shifts generally fall within a 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM window.

· Shifts evolve with the team: Exact shift lengths and start/end times will be finalized once the evening and weekend teams are built and preferences are collected. We will work with you to land on a schedule that genuinely fits your life.

· Weekday coverage opportunity: As weekday shifts open up through scheduled time off, busy stretches, or team growth, part-time team members will be the first people we ask to pick up additional hours. If you want more hours, we want to give them to you first.

· Minimum commitment: We ask for a consistent pattern you can reliably cover each month. If life changes, we will work with you to re-pattern the schedule.

Responsibilities

· Animal Restraint: Assist veterinarians and CVTs with patient handling using low-stress and fear-free techniques (training provided).

· Cleaning & Disinfection: Maintain cleanliness in exam rooms, treatment areas, kennels, and surgical suites.

· Surgical Support: Prep and sterilize surgical instruments and packs; assist with surgical prep of patients.

· Patient Care: Assist in post-op monitoring, feeding, basic wound care (shaving, cleaning), and administering medications under supervision.

· Basic Animal Examination & Monitoring: Perform TPR (temperature, pulse, respiration) and assist with assessing patient comfort.

· Radiology Assistance: Position patients for imaging under supervision.

· Basic Laboratory Work: Prepare lab samples and assist in collecting blood, urine, and tissue samples.

· Restocking & Equipment Maintenance: Ensure the team has the supplies and tools needed to provide efficient care.

· Client Support: Assist with history-taking and patient intake if a CSR or CVT is unavailable.

· Confidence with Fractious or Aggressive Pets: While we prioritize fear-free handling and do not push pets beyond their limits, an ideal candidate will have confidence in working around stressed, fractious, or aggressive pets.

What You Will Not Be Expected to Do: Veterinary assistants at Transcend Veterinary do not perform CVT-level responsibilities such as anesthesia monitoring, IV catheter placements, or advanced medical procedures. We respect the specialized training CVTs receive and ensure all roles are utilized appropriately within the team.

What We Offer

· Growth & Career Development: We believe veterinary assistants should have opportunities to expand their skills, work toward becoming a CVT, or cross-train into the CSR role. Part-time team members are supported in building toward the next step, even on a limited schedule.

· Predictable scheduling: Because our evening and weekend team is starting out small and tight-knit, your shifts matter. We plan schedules thoughtfully, confirm coverage early, and avoid last-minute changes except in true emergencies.

· Relaxed Environment: No uniforms required, so no need to buy a whole new wardrobe.

· Queue-Based System: Our urgent care operates on a queue-based system, allowing the team to work at a comfortable pace and give each case the time it deserves.

· High Standard of Patient Care: Minimum DVM:Staff ratio goal of 1:3 ensures optimal support. We also aim to achieve AAHA accreditation standards.

· Emphasis on Technology: We leverage digital, AI tools, and cloud-based software to streamline processes, increase efficiency, and keep shifts running smoothly.

· Commitment to Fear-Free & Low-Stress Handling: We prioritize the emotional well-being of our patients by implementing fear-free and low-stress handling techniques.

· Voice on the team: Even as a part-time team member, your feedback on how evening and weekend shifts should run matters. We would rather hear it and adjust than have you burn out quietly.

· Pathway to More Hours (and Full Benefits): Evening and weekend team members are given first priority when weekday shifts become available. Team members who consistently work 25+ hours per week are eligible for full benefits. For those who want more hours over time, a clear growth path is available.

Compensation & Benefits

Hourly Pay Range: $17.00 to $22.00 per hour

Pay is based on experience and skills. This range is set above the full-time equivalent of our standard VA compensation to reflect the premium nature of evening and weekend shifts.

Our benefits package reflects our commitment to investing in the people who work here. Eligibility follows our Employee Handbook: team members who consistently work 25 or more hours per week are eligible for the full benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401(k), etc).

Qualifications

· High School Graduate or equivalent.

· Reliable availability within the 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM weekday and 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM weekend windows.

· Comfortable around stressed, fractious, or aggressive pets with appropriate low-stress handling.

· Preferred: Prior experience as a veterinary assistant, kennel technician, or in a similar animal-care setting. Because our evening and weekend team is tight-knit with limited coverage backup, experienced candidates will be prioritized.
