By the age of 23, one-third of Americans have been arrested or convicted.
There are as many people in the US with criminal histories as there are with college degrees.
Every year, 650,000 people in the US are released. Many are forced to serve a “second sentence” — meaning they can’t become fully employed because of the bias and barriers that justice-impacted job seekers routinely face.
These are just a few of the eye-opening statistics that Andrew Glazier, CEO of Defy Ventures, shared in a May 19, 2022, virtual roundtable on fair-chance hiring. The roundtable was the latest invitation-only event hosted by Indeed Leadership Connect, a growing community for senior HR and talent attraction leaders.
Joining Glazier in the discussion was Abbey Carlton, Indeed’s Vice President of Social Impact. Carlton pointed out that fair-chance hiring has always been part of Indeed’s DNA, dating back to its first employee in 2004, and explained the enormously positive impact that employee has had on the company to this day.
Watch the video above for a taste of the May 19 event. Plus, read Glazier’s riveting article — exclusive to the Indeed Leadership Connect community — on how a formerly incarcerated man turned his life around and what the real roadblock is to fair-chance hiring. And learn more about Indeed’s approach to fair-chance hiring in this case study.
