Hospitals are a crucial part of a healthy community. Aside from providing lifesaving emergency care, their routine health services promote overall wellbeing. When we or our loved ones are sick, it’s the treatment we receive in hospitals that can make all the difference. And, of course, they employ some of the most in-demand talent in the country: healthcare professionals.
But that’s not all. Research estimates that by 2032, there will be a shortage of almost 122,000 physicians in the U.S. This means that job seekers with healthcare and medical skills have a wealth of options — so we wanted to help them find the best places to work while showing employers the factors that help attract — and retain — highly satisfied staff.
So just what is driving employee satisfaction in this vital field? Our analytics team dug into the data in our extensive reviews database to find out. Without further ado, here is Indeed’s Top-Rated Workplaces: Best Hospitals — 2019 edition.
Massachusetts General is three-time winner
This year, our list of the top 10 hospitals based on staff ratings spans the country. Only one state has more than one winner: Texas, which sees Houston hospitals ranking third and fourth.
Our rankings include many repeat appearances; in fact, the top five hospitals all made last year's top 10. And Massachusetts General accomplishes an impressive three-peat: It's first on our list for the third year in a row.
When we look at the larger top-25 list, a few states have strong showings. Five Florida hospitals make the cut, including two in Orlando — AdventHealth Greater Orlando and Orlando Health.
New York also has five hospitals in the top 25, including NYU Langone Hospital, which is among the best in the country in 14 adult specialties. Texas has two Houston hospitals in the top ten. And Georgia brings two hospitals to the top 25 as well, with one in the big city of Atlanta and another outside it — Gwinett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. 1. Massachusetts General Hospital
Location: Boston, Mass.
Founded: 1811
Coming in at number one for the third year in a row is Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General) in Boston. Home to the largest hospital-based research institute in the country, over one-third of its 3,000 physicians are researchers. Mass General was also ranked the top U.S. hospital for psychiatric treatment in 2019 by the U.S. News and World Report.
One worker sums up their positive experience: “This is a terrific place, with dedicated and talented staff. Management oversight focuses on what is best for the patient; the organization looks out for its employees and provides a diverse, accepting culture.”

Other reviews appreciate the diversity at the hospital, with one praising its “wide variety of cultures and people all working towards a common goal.” Another adds: “I have loved all the people I have met and worked with — a wide variety of people with vast educational and cultural backgrounds.”
2. New York-Presbyterian Hospital
Location: New York, N.Y.
Founded: 1998
New York-Presbyterian Hospital comes in second this year, jumping up two spots from last year. Born from a 1998 merger of two world-class hospitals, New York-Presbyterian now has locations throughout New York City and as far away as Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. (about 50 miles north of the city). A leader in medical education, the hospital works closely with the medical schools of Cornell and Columbia.
One review emphasizes the hospital’s impact on both the patients they serve and the employees: “New York-Presbyterian enhances your life. Daily. There are no limits as to how great you want to be. Management is key to the success of our mission and everyone is well-respected. New York-Presbyterian is a home away from home — you learn, you develop and you grow.”

3. Houston Methodist
Location: Houston, Texas
Founded: 1919
Houston Methodist is holding strong at number three, the same spot it occupied last year. The giant hospital has humble beginnings: starting with just 30 beds, it now has 24,000 employees. Houston Methodist also joins our top two hospitals on U.S. News and World Report’s 2019-2020 honor roll.
Many reviewers emphasize how much they learned. One nursing student says the following about her experience: “I've been able to grow tremendously with the help of my preceptor, the other nurses on the unit and the management. They've highly encouraged me ... to ensure that I'm learning as much as I can. The most enjoyable part of this job is the great staff.”
Another adds: “I have learned so much by working here. Everyone is so ready to help you advance in your career.”
4. Texas Children’s Hospital
Location: Houston, Texas
Founded: 1951
Number four this year is Texas Children’s Hospital. The Houston hospital has pioneered many successful pediatric treatments since their foundation, including the treatment of David Vetter (aka “the bubble boy”; Vetter was born with a severe immunodeficiency disease and immediately placed in a sterile plastic bubble to save and extend his life).
It is very hard not to smile when you walk into those doors.
The hospital is also a leader in kindness toward patients and families. In the 1950s, it was the first to allow a parent to stay with their child during inpatient care.
Its positive values are extended to employees, as well: “The support you feel [and] the benefits are amazing, and the work environment is very positive and upbeat,” says one worker. “It is very hard not to smile when you walk into those doors.”
5. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
Location: Atlanta, Ga.
Founded: 1998
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, like New York-Presbyterian, is another product of a merger: Egleston Children's Health Care System and Scottish Rite Medical Center, which joined in 1998. Our fifth-best hospital to work for, it's one of the only U.S. pediatric centers that dates back more than a century. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is among the top hospitals for pediatric cancer treatment in the 2019-2020 U.S News and World Report rankings.
One staffer emphasizes the respect this hospital gives employees: “Not only is the culture patient and family-focused, but they treat their employees with respect and dignity. Everyone on the team is valued as part of the team.”
Another emphasizes the wide-ranging impact the hospital had on them: “My work experience and training at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta contributed to both my professional and personal growth. My experience was life-changing and invaluable.”
