What is a job posting?

The easiest way to understand a job posting is to think of it as a job advertisement. A job posting includes not only a description of the open position your company is offering but also enticing details about your company and the exciting benefits or perks available to potential job candidates. Several elements should be considered when writing a job posting.

Job description vs job posting

There’s a very important distinction between a job description and a job posting. A job description is a very detailed write-up of the responsibilities and expectations of the position. There are many ways to write a job description, but it should always include both the job duties and a list of required qualifications.


A job posting is intended to sell the job position and should be focused on an engaging hook to intrigue the potential candidate’s interest.


For example, in a job description, you would list details of the day-to-day tasks of the position. In a job posting, you may consider including incentivizing details such as a sign-on bonus, specific benefits or the number of paid sick days.


While crafting a job description of each job position in your company is important, the function of a well-written job posting is to attract qualified candidates and encourage them to apply.


What’s the difference between a job specification and a job posting?

A job specification is an even more detailed list of expectations than a job description. In a job specification statement, you would expand on the educational qualifications, training, experience, skills or other competencies required of the open job position.


The job specification list represents the level of competency a company desires from the most ideal job candidate. While this list can serve as a useful guide for applicants to gauge whether or not they may be suited for the position, job specifications should not be confused with a job posting, which is centered more on selling the job position rather than getting into its specifics.

Steps for writing a job posting

Your job posting should excite potential candidates and be professional and informative. The tone in your job posting is important, as it will represent the candidate’s first impression of your company’s communication style. While there’s a lot of room for personalization, make sure your job posting follows these basic steps:


1. Write the job title with an engaging lead.

The first step of any job posting should start with the job title. Make sure to clearly define the title of the position being offered. The listing title is more than just a position title; this line is how you’ll attract candidates. Think of it as a slogan for the job position being advertised. You’ll want to include up to three of the most enticing perks of the job—for example, paid sick leave, a remote work environment or a mentorship program.


2. Introduce your company.

Write a brief paragraph that tells your company’s story by outlining any information a potential candidate would want to know. This could be anything from how many years your company has been in operation to your core company values or any other interesting information, such as reputable work clients, work culture, etc.


3. Write the job description.

A job posting is not the place for a long paragraph listing the requirements of a role. Remember, you want to get job candidates excited about the potential role. Include two or three features of the job position that you believe are particularly enticing, such as the team environment or work hours.


4. Spell out the top benefits.

This part of a job posting is very important because it gives you the chance to give an abbreviated recap of the key points a candidate would be interested in regarding this open position. List five or six bullet points describing essential reasons why someone should apply to your job.


5. Include location details.

It’s important to be clear about the location of the job. When looking to attract candidates from different locations, it’s appropriate to also add a quick sentence selling the desirable aspects of your company’s home city. If your company offers relocation or housing assistance, it would be a good idea to restate that in this section. If a job is remote or semi-remote, that should also be mentioned.


6. Finish with contact and application information.

At the close of your job posting, include a contact email and/or phone number as well as clearly defined steps for the application process. By detailing the entire process from application to hire, a candidate may feel more comfortable knowing what steps are involved to secure the job position. If possible, hyperlink to your application page, and make sure to clearly define the application deadline.


7. Reread, edit and post.

The last thing you want is for potential candidates to see a typo or mistake embedded in your job posting. First impressions really do matter, for both the employer and the potential employee. Make sure to edit your job posting and have another set of eyes review your job listing before posting.

Tips for writing a job posting

Here are two tips to help you write a job posting:


1. Do your research.

Search the job position you’re hiring for online and find similar listings, employee reviews or LinkedIn profiles. For example, research people who hold the same job title of the position you’re hiring for. Reach out to them, and mention you’re recruiting for a similar position and would like to ask them some questions to better understand the role.


Websites like Glassdoor give employees the opportunity to review the company they worked for or currently work for. These testimonials can be very helpful to get an idea of what an employee liked or didn’t like about their position. For example, if several employees mention that they loved the ability to work remotely, you could consider this a perk to include in your job posting. Try to use these points to attract potential candidates to your job listing.


2. Talk to your employees.

A similar approach, but even better than doing research online, is to ask your employees directly what they like about working at your company. Not only is this a great resource for understanding how to improve your internal operations overall, but also it can help you understand what makes your company culture most desirable to new hires.

Should you write a job description or a job posting first?

While a job description is very different from a job posting, its function is still essential for understanding the position you’re hiring for. Used internally to specify the requirements, duties and daily tasks of a job position, referencing the job description will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of a job title, which can be very helpful when crafting your job posting.


However, it’s important to remember that a job posting functions as a job advertisement. While some kind of job description should be present in the job posting, you should be focusing more on the most enticing perks or benefits of the job.
