5 nonprofit job boards

Foundation List

Foundation List is a job board exclusively for nonprofits. Its tagline promises to “connect nonprofits and job seekers.” The job board operates nationally, so employers can post positions for all locations across the United States.

Employers should note that Foundation List isn’t a free job board, with postings ranging from $95 to $135, depending on how long you want the posting to stay active (30, 45 or 60 days).

National Nonprofits

National Nonprofits is a job board looking to connect nonprofit organizations with talented job seekers. As an employer, you can create an entire “Careers” page for your organization on the National Nonprofits job board. The mobile-friendly Careers page lets you include details about your organization, photos, videos, your logo and social media links.

There are three possible payment plans for posting jobs on National Nonprofits, ranging from $99 to $499.

Idealist.org

Idealist is one of the oldest nonprofit matching and hiring platforms. The company launched in 1995 and posts jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities. Employers can access a wide range of candidates from across the United States when posting on Idealist.

Packages range from $25 to $195 per posting, but discounts are offered if you purchase a bundle. Pricing varies depending on what type of job poster you are (social impact organization versus corporation).

Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN)

The Young Nonprofit Professionals Network is more than just a job board—it’s an organization that activates young leaders and connects them with the right resources, people and opportunities.Note that YNPN requires all postings to include specific salary information (hourly rate, salary or salary range). All new postings are typically approved within 24-36 hours.

Unlike most job boards, posting is free on YNPN for employers. All job postings stay active for 45 days.

Indeed

You don’t have to stick to an exclusively nonprofit hiring platform to find some of the best talent. Instead, consider making your hiring process as streamlined as possible by posting on Indeed.

Indeed has 635M Job Seeker Profiles¹ and over 8M job seekers create an Indeed account every month. That means you’re likely to find a wide range of candidates for your nonprofit jobs. As an example, according to Indeed’s Hiring Insights (log in to access), 102,456 job seekers clicked on grants manager jobs on Indeed in May 2023 alone. There were also 14,075 job seekers who clicked on fundraising manager jobs in that same month.

More than just a job board, Indeed is a complete hiring solution. Along with job postings, you can access tools to screen and interview candidates, search resumes and perform other recruiting tasks. With a paid job post, you can also get access to matched candidates. As a nonprofit employer, you can find a wide range of candidates on Indeed.

Nonprofit job board FAQs

What degrees are best for nonprofit jobs?

Employers should note that no particular degree makes a candidate worthy of a nonprofit job, and a candidate without a college degree can still be a fantastic fit for a role. When it comes to hiring for the nonprofit sector, passion, experience and dedication can be much more impactful.

Still, some employers value seeing a candidate who has completed a degree. In this case, some of the most common degrees held by nonprofit employees may be:

  • Business administration
  • Nonprofit management
  • Social work
  • Public administration

Why do people work for nonprofits?

Individuals who choose to work in the nonprofit sector versus the private sector often do so because they’re driven by passion. They want to help the organization achieve its mission and are willing to work hard to achieve that common goal. When hiring for a nonprofit role, employers should try to find candidates who are engaged, passionate and motivated by the organization’s vision.

Do nonprofit job candidates need to provide references?

Candidates in the nonprofit sector are often asked to provide references during their interview screening. References are one of the ways an employer can verify a candidate’s character and reliability before they extend an offer of employment.
