Optimize your new and existing job descriptions to reach more candidates

Add important job details
To get started posting your repair, maintenance or installation job, log in to your existing Indeed account or create an account. We’ll guide you through posting or editing your job by asking you step-by-step questions. The details you provide will add up to a comprehensive job post that helps you reach great installation, maintenance and repair candidates.
1. Write an effective job title
Choose a job title that accurately describes the role. For example, “HVAC Installer” is more descriptive than “Installer.” It’s also important to use a job title that job seekers are searching for. For instance, “Auto Mechanic Rock Star Needed” is likely not as effective as “Auto Mechanic” or “Automotive Technician.”

Indeed will auto-populate a drop-down menu with suggested titles to choose from. We may also offer smart recommendations for more effective titles. This is based on the most successful job title in your location in the past month that attracted the highest number of applications on Indeed.
For more tips on writing effective job titles, check out How to Choose the Best Job Title for Your Open Role.
2. Include shift information and work setting
Installation, maintenance and repair jobs often require certain work shifts and schedules. When posting your job, select the job type (full-time, part-time, temporary, etc.), the weekly day range (Monday to Friday, weekend availability, no weekends, etc.) and the shift you’re looking to fill (morning, evening, day, night, etc.).
Based on the job title, you’ll also get various work settings to choose from. For repair, maintenance and installation jobs, you might see outdoor work, warehouse, construction site, etc.

3. Add compensation details
Jobs with competitive salaries are 38% more likely to report a hire by day seven, so it’s important to include this information with your job post. Consider offering competitive wages to help your job stand out to people looking for installation, repair and maintenance roles.
When posting your job, Indeed will estimate the pay range based on third-party submissions to Indeed, but you can make adjustments if needed. Display a range, a starting amount, the maximum amount or the exact amount to potential candidates. Indeed will also offer smart compensation recommendations to increase the chance you’ll receive more applicants. This recommendation is based on an analysis of jobs in your location posted on Indeed in the last 12 months.

You can also select the benefits you offer. Including benefits can help you highlight what makes working at your company special. Be sure to select all that apply.

Write a standout job description
After adding your job details, it’s time to write a job description. Upload a PDF/DOCX or copy/paste your existing job description into the job description field. You can also write one from scratch.
Need help getting started? Check out our job description builder for popular repair, maintenance and installation jobs. (If you don’t see the role you’re looking for in the list below, you can search for it in the builder.)
Make sure to review and edit the description so it fits your specific role and company. Provide a transparent and clear description of the duties, expectations, working environment and shift schedule. Additionally, consider including any unique benefits and perks that make your business stand out (e.g., paid time off, bonuses, wellness program).
Set screener questions and deal breakers
Once you’ve confirmed the job details and description, add relevant screener questions and mark the most important requirements as “deal breakers” to help you filter applicants. When a candidate applies to your job, they’ll be required to answer deal breaker questions. If their answers don’t match your minimum criteria, they’ll be automatically filtered out—but you still have the flexibility to see them in your dashboard at any time.
For example, imagine your deal breaker is two years of HVAC installation experience. In this case, you’ll only see applicants who say they have 2+ years of HVAC installation experience in your main Employer Dashboard. All other candidates will appear in your Other candidates tab. This can help you save time by automatically filtering for people who meet your most important requirements. All of this means that jobs with screener questions are 40% more likely to result in a hire.
Deal breaker questions to consider for repair, maintenance and installation occupations include: licenses/certifications (e.g., ASE Certification, driver’s license), minimum experience in a certain skill or tool and/or willingness to travel to different work sites. Check out this list of deal breakers we recommend including with your repair, maintenance and installation job post to help you find quality candidates.
Choose relevant repair, maintenance and installation skills tests
Indeed may recommend skills tests based on the job title, but you can also choose from our bank of Indeed Assessments. On the Customize your application process section, scroll down and click the Browse questions and tests dropdown and select Skills test. You can select up to two tests for candidates to take after they apply for your job.
Examples of skills tests you might want to include for repair and maintenance jobs include:
- Automotive maintenance: Tests knowledge of general vehicle maintenance and automotive parts and ability to diagnose and recommend actions for minor emergency repairs.
- Basic maintenance and repair: Tests the candidate’s ability to perform routine building maintenance and basic repairs, including plumbing, electrical and drywall.
- Mechanical knowledge: Tests the candidate’s ability to understand mechanical concepts, processes and relations between components.
- Manufacturing fit: Measures the traits that are important for success in manufacturing roles.
- Work style: Reliability: Tests the tendency to be dependable, to act with integrity and to follow the rules.

Should you sponsor your repair, maintenance & installation job?
On Indeed, you can either post your job for free* or pay to sponsor your job for better visibility and to unlock other hiring features. Whether or not you should sponsor your jobs depends on your hiring needs. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to help you make a decision:
- How quickly do I need to make a hire? If you need to hire someone soon, sponsoring your job can give you better visibility to help you hire faster. In fact, Sponsored Jobs are 2.6X times faster to first hire than non-sponsored jobs. You can also add an “Urgently Hiring” label when you sponsor your job, which lets job seekers know you’re looking to hire as quickly as possible. The label will appear under your job title. Sponsored Jobs posted directly on Indeed with Urgently Hiring make a hire 5 days faster than non-sponsored jobs.
- Am I hiring multiple people for the same job? If you’re hiring more than one person for the same job opening, such as line workers or mechanics, you’ll likely need more applications. Sponsored Jobs deliver 60% more applicants on average than non-sponsored jobs so paying to post could get you more of the candidates you need.
- How competitive is the market? Sponsoring your job on Indeed can help your job stand out, especially since there’s high competition for repair, maintenance and installation workers.
- Is it a hard-to-fill position? If you’re hiring workers in specialized trades or need people who are highly experienced, your job could benefit from the added visibility that comes with a Sponsored Job.
