What is Hiring Insights on Indeed?
Indeed’s Hiring Insights gives you the data you need to stay ahead of the competition. We surface insightful data, like average salary for similar jobs, how many job seekers are looking for roles like yours and other competitive intelligence to help you successfully recruit for your open roles. You don’t need to post a job to get access. All you have to do is create an Indeed account or sign in to your existing account.
Let’s say you’re looking to hire an accountant in Austin, TX. You can use Hiring Insights to get information specific to this job and location. Once you’ve logged into your Indeed account, hover over the Analytics tab on the left-hand navigation pane of your Indeed Employer Dashboard and click Hiring Insights from the drop-down menu.
Enter your location and job title (or occupational category) and hit Generate report. You can also change the month and year of the data you want to see by clicking the drop-down on the top right of the page.
Once you tell us what you’re looking for, we’ll deliver you the data you need in a simple, focused report, full of information about the role you’re hiring for. You can then download a PDF of the report to share with your colleagues, or add the report to your Favorite reports tab to revisit later.

Let’s dive into the different kinds of data available in your Hiring Insights report and how you can use this information to help you make better hires, faster:
Trends
The trendline chart displays the number of jobs, job seekers, job seekers per job and employers over time. In this case, change over time for the selected data is indexed against the week of January 26th to February 1st, 2020. The value reported is how much greater or smaller the data has become. For example, a job value of 1.25 would mean there were 25% more jobs that week than in the indexed week.
You can choose which trends you want to see on the graph by toggling the data on or off. You can also hover over the lines in the chart for a more detailed view of the data.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
Use this information to see supply and demand and how trends have been changing over time. For example, if you notice that the number of job seekers per job opening has been decreasing in the last several months, it may require more time, effort and money to hire for that role than it might have in the past. This can help you set more realistic expectations and budgets for your recruiting efforts, and may require you to think outside the box to attract candidates.
Competition score
This data point rates how competitive the job is in your selected location on a scale of 1 to 100. The higher the score, the more competition you’ll likely be facing when hiring for that role in your location. The score is based on Indeed employer data for a three-month period ending at the end of the month you choose for this title and/or location compared to the rest of the country.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
High competition means that the job in your location may be harder and take longer to fill than other jobs with moderate or low competition. The competition score can help you determine how hard or easy it may be to hire for your open role in your city, and may mean you’ll have to optimize your job post and/or adjust your hiring budget.
For example, if your role has a high competition score, you may want to offer a more competitive salary, highlight attractive benefits and perks in your job descriptions, improve your branding or consider sponsoring your job on Indeed to reach more relevant candidates. If your job has a low competition score, starting with a free* job post on Indeed could give you the results you need.

Number of jobs
In your Hiring Insights report you’ll also see the number of jobs posted that received clicks for your selected role title and location during the month. Additionally, it’ll show you how much this has changed since the previous month to give you an idea of how the job market is changing.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
This is another data point that can reveal how competitive it may be to hire for your open role in your city.
Job seekers and job seekers per job
Your Hiring Insights report will also show you the number of job seekers and the number of job seekers per job to have clicked on jobs posted for the selected role title and location. Additionally, you can see how much these numbers have changed since the previous month.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
Leverage this data to help you decide which jobs to sponsor on Indeed. For example, if there are a lot of job seekers per job, that signals that your job could be easier to fill. However, if the number is low, your job may be harder to fill and could benefit from sponsorship.
Candidate devices
This data point shows the percentage of clicks that came from mobile devices based on your selected location and job title.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
If a lot of clicks come from mobile devices, consider making your job posts more mobile-friendly. This may include keeping it brief, using bullet points to break up the text and enabling Indeed Apply for any jobs that have been aggregated from your career site or ATS.
Average salary
Hiring Insights also shows you the lowest and highest salary in a market for your selected job title, highlighting where the average salary falls and how it compares to the national average. These numbers are calculated using data from a variety of sources, including employees, users, and past and present job postings on Indeed for a period up to the last 36 months.
You can see hourly, monthly or yearly salary figures by using the drop-down.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
Use this data to determine a fair salary for your job in your specific market, or to see how competitive you are in terms of pay. Consider including this salary figure or a salary range in your job descriptions to attract the right candidates. Jobs on Indeed with salary information have 31% more apply starts per impression.

Total number of employers with jobs
The total number of employers with active roles for your selected job title in your market can give you an idea of what your competition may be like. For example, a higher number of employers can mean your job may be harder to fill than a job with fewer employers hiring for the same role.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
Unemployment percentage
This data point shows the current unemployment rate in your selected market which is based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment figure for the most recent month available.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
The percentage of unemployment often directly affects the quality of workers who are available for hire. For example, a low unemployment rate may mean that you’ll get fewer applications for your open job(s) since there are fewer people looking for work. The unemployment rate can help you predict how hard or easy it may be to fill your role and may mean you’ll need to increase or re-allocate your recruiting budget to attract applicants.
Top search terms by clicks
Digging into the most popular search terms that lead to clicks on jobs in your title and market can help you optimize your job descriptions. This data shows you the keywords and job titles people are searching for and that are also getting engagement.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
You can use these top search terms to make your job posts more discoverable by your target audience. For example, you might choose the job title “Accountant” over “Staff Accountant” since the former is more popular among job seekers. This Hiring Insights data can also help you understand what job seekers care about. In the example above, “payroll” and “accounts receivable” are included in the top 10 search terms for people looking for accounting jobs, so it may be worth it to include those keywords in your job posting if they’re relevant.
Top employers by clicks
This section of your Hiring Insights report shows the most popular employers for the job title and location based on the number of clicks received in your selected month.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
This competitive data can give you an idea of how you stack up against the competition when hiring for a specific role in your location. For example, take a look at each company’s job descriptions to see what benefits/perks and compensation they’re offering to give your company a competitive edge. You could also view their Indeed Company Page, social media and website to see why people enjoy working there and to understand what each company is doing to attract top candidates. Competitive analysis can help you identify your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses and strategize about how you can differentiate yourself.
Total resumes and recent resumes
In your Hiring Insights report, you’ll see the number of resumes on Indeed where the most recently listed work experience was the job title you selected in your location. You’ll also see how many of these resumes have been added or updated within the last month, as well as how this compares to the previous month.

Indeed data, US – October 2022

Additionally, you can get a general feel for how active the hiring pool may be based on how many job seekers have updated or added their resumes to Indeed in the last month.
Reported education level and years of experience
The report also reveals the average years of experience and education level across all industries as listed on job seekers’ resumes uploaded on Indeed.

Indeed data, US – October 2022
Use this data to help you write more effective job descriptions. For instance, if the chart shows that your target candidates typically have 6-10 years of experience, you may want to include that range in your job description. Similarly, reported education levels can help you determine more accurate education requirements.
Most common employers and locations
The last section of your Hiring Insights report shows the most commonly listed employers and locations on job seeker resumes on Indeed within the selected category.

These insights can help you understand where job seekers currently work (or most recently worked) and where they live within the 25-mile radius of your selected location. This can give you an idea of the most common industries for your role title in your area, be a good starting point for competitive analysis and give you ideas of new nearby locations to expand your outreach. For example, if your company is in Austin, TX, you might consider searching for candidates in neighboring cities, such as Round Rock or Pflugerville.
What is Indeed Analytics?
Like Hiring Insights, Indeed Analytics is another useful tool that can help you improve your job posting performance and make better hires. While Hiring Insights provides market-related data, Indeed Analytics data reflects how your specific jobs on Indeed are performing.
This includes how many people see your job posts, how many click on them, how much you’re spending and more. Indeed Analytics also shows data for other products you may be using, including interviews, hiring events and Employer Branding Ads.
To access Indeed Analytics, go to your Indeed Employer Dashboard and click the Analytics tab on the left-hand navigation pane. On the Analytics overview tab, you’ll get an at-a-glance snapshot of your spend across Indeed products and what you’re getting for each. Select and compare date ranges using the date range selector in the top right.

For more details on how your job posts performed, visit the Jobs and campaigns tab. Select the Summary page to see the overall performance of your job posts from impressions to applies.
You’ll also learn what percentage of job seekers viewed your job posts on desktop and mobile devices, as well as what jobs ranked highest and lowest for your selected dates. If you want to narrow your focus and only look at certain jobs or locations, click Filter data and make your selections.
Filters are also useful on the Detailed report page within Jobs and campaigns.

Here you can look at all the data available for each job post, including:
Impressions
Impressions refer to the number of times your job post was shown in job seeker search results. Low impression numbers could mean you don’t have an effective job title or description, or that your listing is missing the keywords job seekers are searching for. Optimizing your job description by including top search terms by clicks, choosing a more effective job title and/or increasing your job budget could boost its visibility.
Clicks and clickthrough rate (CTR)
Clicks and clickthrough rate (CTR) help you understand how many people are interested enough to actually click on your job when they see it. The CTR is the total number of clicks on your job post divided by the number of impressions during your selected date range. A low CTR could mean that your job title isn’t compelling or clear enough, or that your job post could benefit from sponsorship. Check out the top search terms by clicks for the role in your location to help you write a more effective job title.
Applies
Other useful data points are apply starts and apply start rate. Apply starts are the number of times the “Apply” button was clicked on your jobs. Apply start rate is the percentage of people who clicked the “Apply” button after clicking on your jobs. These metrics can show you how persuasive your job posting is. For example, if your jobs have a low apply start rate, you may want to review your job description to make sure it has all the details job seekers want to know.
You may also want to check out the reported education level and years of experience and the average salary for people in your role to set more accurate job requirements and improve the apply start rate.
How much you’re spending
If you’ve sponsored any of your jobs on Indeed you can view your spend per job, as well as the average costs per click, started application and application. These results can help you make more informed decisions about your hiring budget. For example, you may want to shift budgets from jobs that are performing well to other jobs that need an additional push.
