10 Nursing Assistant Interview Questions and Answers

Why do you want to work as a nursing assistant?

This question helps you determine if a candidate is well-suited for the role by identifying what draws them to the field. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Personal connection to nursing or health care
  • Sense of service and the desire to help others
  • Compassionate heart and demeanor
Example:

“Caring for a close family member during serious illness helped me realize how meaningful, compassionate and respectful care can be. That experience motivated me to pursue a role where I can support others with dignity."

How do you organize your daily duties as a nursing assistant?

“It is important for certified nursing assistants to not only understand their duties, but also be able to keep track of all of these daily tasks. Asking how they manage their time can help you to determine their level of organization and understand systems that they might utilize to ensure all daily work is completed.” —Michelle Hensley, DNP. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Willingness to assist patients with activities of daily living and provide excellent patient service
  • Technical nursing assistant skills, like the ability to take vitals and dress wounds
  • Time management, organization and multi-tasking abilities
Example:

“When caring for patients, I ensure I meet all of their needs, such as taking vitals, assisting with their personal care and following any orders for medical care tasks while ensuring the patient’s comfort, health and safety. I keep lists of my patients and their daily care needs to help me keep track of my assigned duties.”

How would you handle patient abuse, either observed by you or reported by a patient?

Nursing assistants should be attentive to signs of patient abuse, both in their own conduct and in the care provided by others. In addition to maintaining the highest standards of patient care, candidates should understand the importance of following workplace procedures for reporting concerns. In some states, nursing assistants may have responsibilities related to reporting suspected patient abuse or neglect, depending on local laws. For more information, please visit the government webpage on the topic. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Proactive response to observations of abuse
  • Willingness to report concerns through appropriate workplace channels and, when required, external reporting processes
  • Commitment to one’s own highest standards of treatment and care
Example:

“If I observe or become aware of potential patient abuse, I take it seriously. I believe it's important to act with professionalism, ethics and compassion while following my employer's reporting procedures. If a concern isn't addressed appropriately, I would continue to raise it through the proper channels to help ensure patient safety.”

What is your process and procedure for entering a patient’s room?

It’s important that patients feel they can maintain their dignity while under care. One key way to provide this is by doing everything possible to respect each patient’s privacy in their own room. A nursing assistant should be friendly and respectful the moment they enter the patient’s room. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

Example:

“Before entering a patient’s room, I always knock and announce my entry. I’m also sure to greet the patient and introduce myself if we haven’t met. Then I ask how they are doing and if they need anything before proceeding with my list of tasks.”

How would you handle a situation where a patient refused your care?

Nursing assistants deal with conflict in a calm, responsible and patient-centered manner. An important element in resolving conflict is communication. For example, strong nursing assistant candidates feel confident discussing a patient’s concerns with them directly and attempting to identify a solution together. Ideally, the CNA also uses this as an opportunity to educate and inform the patient about their role. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • A compassionate, patient-centered approach to conflict resolution
  • The ability to remain calm and clear-headed in a crisis
  • The ability to listen and articulate their thoughts well
Example:

“If a patient refused care, I would attempt to determine their reason for declining care and listen to their responses carefully. I would then do what I could to help alleviate any of their concerns. One way to do this might be by explaining my role better and potentially letting them choose the order of my tasks.”

How would you respond if a patient with late-stage Alzheimer’s thought you were one of their loved ones while you were administering care?

Nursing assistants commonly interact with patients who have progressive memory diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia, which could result in confusing interactions and conversations. These professionals understand how their responses could impact a patient's well-being. As an interviewer, this question helps you assess whether the candidate is empathetic and thoughtful in their interactions with patients. It also allows candidates to demonstrate their knowledge of common conditions they may encounter when caring for patients. A good answer typically demonstrates:

  • Empathy and kindness
  • Knowledge of best practices for memory care
  • Self-awareness
Example:

“When interacting with patients experiencing advanced memory impairment or cognitive changes, I try to keep in mind that it isn't necessarily important that they are fully aware of their surroundings as long as they are in good spirits. I'd interact with them in a friendly way without contradicting them while still maintaining a professional demeanor. One thing that I would be sure to do is note the interaction in their records so that other members of the care team are aware of how their condition was progressing."

Do you currently hold a state certification as a nursing assistant?

This question helps you to identify whether your nursing assistant has the right qualifications for the role. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Relevant certification for that state
  • Up-to-date medical knowledge
  • Understanding of what they learned during their training or education
Example:

“I completed my training at Wavewood Community College, where I learned skills like taking vital signs, safety protocols and basic patient care. Since our state requires nursing assistants to pass a certification exam, I am happy to say that I successfully completed this with a high score. As a result, I feel confident in my duties and look forward to learning more both on-the-job and through further training.”

How do you keep track of each patient’s allergies and dietary needs when helping them eat their meals?

This question helps you to identify how organized a nursing assistant is and their understanding of patient needs. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Organizational skills
  • Time management
  • Understanding of allergens and dietary requirements
Example:

“To keep track of patient allergies and diet, I refer to each patient’s electronic medical records for details on dietary restrictions and any feeding instructions provided by senior staff. I also check a patient to see if they have a color-coded wristband indicating an allergy I need to be aware of. When providing patients with their meal, I double-check to ensure that the meal provided is suitable based on this information and that an error has not been made.”

What is your experience working with patients with disabilities?

Use this question to learn about a nursing assistant’s ability to support patients with disabilities. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Compassion
  • Empathy
  • Problem-solving skills
Example:

“When supporting a patient with a disability, I aim to balance encouraging independence wherever possible with physical and cognitive support when it is necessary. This centers the patient’s dignity throughout their treatment. For example, I ask a patient first before offering mobility assistance and am respectful if they choose to decline my support. I am also strongly aware of the fact that not all disabilities are visible and use a patient’s medical records to identify any disabilities or areas in which they need additional support.”

How would you communicate with a non-verbal patient about your caretaking activities?

This question helps you to find out about a nursing assistant’s communication skills. Evaluate responses that demonstrate:

  • Sign language skills
  • Understands body language or non-verbal communication
  • Creates a supportive and psychologically safe environment
Example:

“I work to identify the individual patient’s needs, preferred communication style and current state of well-being. For example, I look for signs of distress and assess whether a patient is communicating with me nonverbally, and I provide communication assistance tools if needed. If a patient is in distress, I try to communicate with them in their preferred manner in order to identify the root cause and work with them to create a more psychologically safe environment.”
