Surgeon job title

A great job title typically includes a general term, level of experience and any special requirements. The general term will optimize your job title to show up in a general search for jobs of the same nature. The level of experience will help you attract the most qualified applicants by outlining the amount of responsibility and prior knowledge required. And if your position is specialized, consider including the specialization in the job title as well. But avoid using internal titles, abbreviations or acronyms to make sure people understand what your job posting is before clicking.

Examples of Surgeon job titles

  • Surgeon
  • Chief Surgeon
  • General Surgeon
  • Orthopedic Surgeon
  • Physician (Trauma Surgery)

Surgeon job summary

A great job description starts with a compelling summary of the position and its role within your company. Your summary should provide an overview of your company and expectations for the position. Outline the types of activities and responsibilities required for the job so job seekers can determine if they are qualified, or if the job is a good fit.

Example of a Surgeon job summary

Our 250-bed hospital seeks a General Surgeon to join our staff. The successful candidate can join our team and gain hospital support or open a private practice within our facility and enjoy hospital privileges. We have an established and growing patient volume that provides the successful candidate with immediate cases. Expected patient volume is 12-15 patients per day. We’re looking for a Surgeon with bariatric experience as well as experience in a busy hospital setting. If this sounds like you, please get in touch today to discuss this opportunity.

Surgeon responsibilities and duties

The responsibilities and duties section is the most important part of the job description. Here you should outline the functions this position will perform on a regular basis, how the job functions within the organization and who the job reports to.

Examples of Surgeon responsibilities

  • Perform surgeries as needed for patients who wish to lose weight and have been unable to do so through non-surgical means
  • Counsel patients about the risks of bariatric surgery and the potential complications during post-op
  • Contribute to our care delivery team by working with other members of staff
  • Maintain detailed and accurate patient records through our EHR (electronic health record) system
  • Perform post-op examinations of patients prior to releasing them from care
  • Schedule follow-up visits with patients to ensure continuing health
  • Deny bariatric patients access to surgical treatment when appropriate
  • Perform duties within budgetary constraints

Surgeon qualifications and skills

Next, outline the required and preferred skills for your position. This may include education, previous job experience, certifications and technical skills. You may also include soft skills and personality traits that you envision for a successful hire. While it may be tempting to include a long list of skills and requirements, including too many could dissuade qualified candidates from applying. Keep your list of qualifications concise, but provide enough detail with relevant keywords and terms.

Examples of Surgeon skills

  • Board certification in general surgery required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in general surgery
  • Willingness to provide guidance to residents during training rotations
  • Ability to counsel patients about their weight-loss goals
  • Familiarity with EHR systems a plus
  • Some da Vinci training preferred, but not required
