The Product Engineer will be based out of the Willis, TX facility. The role will be responsible for the design and development of engineering solutions for vehicle control systems, using automotive industry standard tools and processes. It will be working with a professional Project Team to deliver programs from Concept to Production while executing engineering tasks within projects in order to meet schedule, budget, and specifications.

Responsibilities

Areas of responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Completion of development engineering tasks as identified in Kongsberg Product Development processes (KBD-NPI & PIP)
  • Support the development of new products that support Kongsberg Automotive s Strategic Plan
  • Ensure completion of design documents and properly file into appropriate project folders
  • Co-ordinate and manage the manufacture of sample parts with the production plant, including procurement of Tier II manufactured components

Requirements

The ideal candidate must have:

  • BS Degree in Mechanical engineering

AutoCAD electrical/mechanical drawing experience is a plus, as is knowledge of PLC communication structures/programming or HTML5 programming.

JOB Summary: The Sr Product Engineer will be responsible for the engineering of assigned products through process design, development, implementation, and improvement, utilizing knowledge and experience in product design, fabrication, and assembly. This position will be responsible for mentoring product engineers and driving strategic initiatives.

JOBS Duties AND Essential Functions:

  • Drive product development from concept through market introduction, ensuring that designs meet performance specifications, regulatory, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Develop CAD models and drawings, including component, subassembly, and top-level drawings.
  • Must be able to handle multiple projects while maintaining accuracy, detail, and timelines.
  • Conduct design reviews as specified in project plans, and in accordance with company procedure.
  • Prepare documentation release packages, including detail drawings, bills of material (BOM), and/or procedures. Approve Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and obtain approvals from others, as required.
  • Conduct product benchmarking and analyze data to develop new designs or concepts.
  • Problem solving lead for current and new products.
  • Bring initiatives and activities to closure in a timely manner through effective interaction with individuals, both internal and external.
  • Conduct risk and failure mode analysis activities and complete related forms, including performing failure mode effect analysis (DFMEA), design for assembly (DFA), design for manufacturing (DFM), risk/benefit assessments, and others, as needed, for products under development and post-production.
  • Perform and document tolerance analysis of components and assemblies to ensure proper fit and function including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) on components and systems.
  • Develop prototype devices for testing and for evaluation during verification and validation phases. Work with internal and/or external resources to produce prototype device components. Assist in material procurement and support for prototype build operations in coordination with divisional resources.
  • Conduct and/or monitor product verification and validation testing to demonstrate product safety and efficacy. Determine which testing is required to satisfy product requirements, to investigate potential failure modes, and to otherwise address the project design inputs. Develop protocols, plan testing, and perform or monitor testing. Complete all necessary documentation including DVP&Rs.
  • Answers technical questions, proposes budgets for projects, mentor product engineers, and works with various other departments.
  • Drive continuous improvement and support optimization of processes and sub-processes and mentor product engineers to do the same.
  • Plan and develop engineering products as required, managing a cross-functional team to complete deliverables within agreed upon timing.
  • Understand and actively perform the engineering change management process, including technical and commercial alignment with internal and external customers.
  • Coach product engineers on engineering best practices and help to develop and improve engineering processes and procedures.
  • Work with vendors to discover and develop equipment to support achievement of the desired future state.

Product Engineer Education and Training Requirements

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is often required, and a master’s degree is typically preferred, to work as a Product Engineer. Qualified candidates will usually have a degree in engineering with coursework in product engineering. Some Product Engineers may specialize in a certain type of product, such as technology, aerospace, industrial or mechanical. Engineering students will begin training through an internship in their college program.

Certification is not a requirement to work as a Product Engineer, but some hiring managers prefer it. The Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfge) is a certification for Product Engineers working in the manufacturing industry. The Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) certification is relevant to the applied technology industry.

Product Engineer Experience Requirements

Many hiring managers prefer to hire a Product Engineer with previous experience.
