What does an Architect do?

An Architect is responsible for the design and creation of plans and blueprints from which buildings or structures are constructed. The Architect may provide reports and studies on land use, cost accounting, and feasibility for design planning purposes. Architects will need excellent communication skills as they can work closely with clients, engineers, planners, and other industry professionals. In depth knowledge of design principles and computer aided design software is essential. A degree in Architectural Design from an accredited college of university is required.

Architect job title

A great job title typically includes a general term, level of experience and any special requirements. The general term will optimize your job title to show up in a general search for jobs of the same nature. The level of experience will help you attract the most qualified applicants by outlining the amount of responsibility and prior knowledge required. And if your position is specialized, consider including the specialization in the job title as well. But avoid using internal titles, abbreviations or acronyms to make sure people understand what your job posting is before clicking.

Examples of Architect job titles

  • Architect
  • Lead Architect
  • Architect (with Revit proficiency)
  • Architectural Coordinator
  • Architectural Designer

Architect job summary

A great job description starts with a compelling summary of the position and its role within your company. Your summary should provide an overview of your company and expectations for the position. Outline the types of activities and responsibilities required for the job so job seekers can determine if they are qualified, or if the job is a good fit.

Example of an Architect job summary

Our residential design firm is looking for a Lead Architect to manage our contract design department. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating, evaluating and manipulating designs to meet the needs of our clientele. We focus on energy-efficient designs, so we’re looking for a licensed architect with green building experience. Additionally, the ideal candidate should be open to contributing designs to our online repository of residential blueprints. Such contributions earn commissions in addition to the candidate’s base salary. If you are looking for an exciting opportunity to join a growing team of dedicated architects, we’re interested in meeting with you.

Architect responsibilities and duties

The responsibilities and duties section is the most important part of the job description. Here you should outline the functions this position will perform on a regular basis, how the job functions within the organization and who the job reports to.

Examples of Architect responsibilities

  • Create architectural designs based on customer input and feedback
  • Prepare and execute client contracts pursuant to specific consultations
  • Adjust contracts and designs to meet the changing needs of clients
  • Draft designs that reflect green building values and cater to our clients’ desires for smaller carbon footprints
  • Adhere to all industry standards in design
  • Communicate with contractors and construction workers to implement designs
  • Oversee and manage architectural production staff

Architect qualifications and skills

Next, outline the required and preferred skills for your position. This may include education, previous job experience, certifications and technical skills. You may also include soft skills and personality traits that you envision for a successful hire. While it may be tempting to include a long list of skills and requirements, including too many could dissuade qualified candidates from applying. Keep your list of qualifications concise, but provide enough detail with relevant keywords and terms.

Examples of Architect skills

  • 6+ years’ experience working in residential architectural design
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Design or related field (M.Arch preferred)
  • Registration with NCARB
  • Extensive experience with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with Revit software highly desirable
