Cactus Fire Department is a combination fire department made up of Volunteers and Full-time firefighter employees. Each member of the organization is dedicated to our community in every way, from community education programs and prevention programs to providing the highest level of care and compassion on every emergency call.

We provide all-hazards services, including structure fire protection, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and rescue response for this community and the surrounding areas. Our total response area is approximately 67 square miles.

Cactus Fire Department opened its new firehouse in April of 2022. Each firefighter is assigned their own bedroom and their own desktop workstation. No other firefighters utilize these after they are assigned.

The applicant does not have to live in a designated radius of the department.

Essential Job Functions

Under general supervision, a Firefighter/EMT shall perform firefighting and emergency medical services at the required level required to protect life and/or property from the dangers of fire, medical emergency, hazardous materials, accidents, and natural or man-made disasters, using a variety of firefighting, emergency, and medical procedures, techniques, and equipment. A Firefighter/EMT shall perform the duties of medical and non-medical necessary calls under the direction of the shift supervisor. Firefighters are placed on a 48-96 shift rotation (two days on, four days off) this can include holidays. This position might occasionally include callouts for red-flag days to fill sick and vacation requests for other staff. During those shifts, Firefighters live and work in close quarters with other individuals and must work cooperatively with other members of his or her team.

  • Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical service calls, hazardous materials calls, and other emergency calls.
  • Performs fire suppression functions, including rescue, deploying and operating hoses, ventilating roofs, performing salvage work, and other related tasks associated with fire suppression.

OTHER JOB Functions:Inspects, cleans, and maintains apparatus, equipment, station, and grounds. Participates in and occasionally may conduct fire training classes. Studies technical materials on equipment operation, fire suppression, and fire prevention to improve or maintain an effective level of performance; must be capable of learning emergency response territory; may be required to act as Driver-Pump Operator; function as an incident commander; conduct station tours for school children; perform other duties as directed by a supervisor.

Job Description

The Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is committed to prevention and suppression of fires aboard ships under construction, and production facilities within our complex. The EMS Team is responsible for the entire Bath Facility. The individual will be expected to make routine tours/inspections on U.S. Navy vessels, units under construction, all BIW manufacturing buildings and office spaces. The successful candidate will be capable of working in an energetic Industrial Firefighting Environment and following a standard firefighting command structure.

Shifts are 12 hours on, and 12 hours off, with a 4 day on, and 4 day off rotation.

A Secret clearance is required to complete the probationary period successfully. The background and clearance process is conducted by the BIW Industrial Security Department. Planned and unplanned overtime may be required as necessities arise. Resume and cover letter are recommended.
Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Current and active member in a volunteer or career department required
  • A valid Maine EMS license is required.
  • Knowledge of structural fire response operations, emergency medical care, and firefighting equipment inspections is also required.
  • Interior firefighting experience is required in order to enter the hiring process and initiate training.

Required/Preferred Experience
  • Previous interior Firefighting & Fire service experience required
  • A Maine or Pro-Board Firefighter Certification 1 & 2 are Required
  • An Active and Valid State of Maine EMT-B license is Required
  • Confined Space Rescue preferred

Firefighter education and training requirements

At the minimum level, a high school diploma or GED is required to become a Firefighter. Some job descriptions also include an associate degree in fire science as a preferred qualification. There are also course programs at vocational colleges that are conducted in conjunction with local fire departments creating qualified candidates. EMT certification is also a requirement to ensure Firefighters have the proper medical training in addition to passing the fire academy training.

Firefighter experience requirements

Most Firefighter positions prefer some experience for their applicants, but extensive on-the-job training is offered with the fire academy. Of course, an applicant who is already a Career Firefighter can get through that much faster and potentially skip it altogether as long as they remain in compliance with local requirements.
