The manager is responsible for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity, efficiency and profitability of departmental and organizational operations through the provision of effective methods and strategies.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This individual must also be ambitious, a self starter and go-getter! You must have experience being a team builder in a rapid growth environment! Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Continually focuses on achieving market base profitability through effective management of all fleet activities, including cost control, efficient routing, driver time management, employee development, and high training and safety standards.
  • Ensure safe and reliable vehicles are available to meet operational requirements.
  • Conducts fleet evaluations to ensure maintenance standards are met.
  • Maintain fleet records, renew registrations, IFTA, IRP, HHU permits, etc
  • Management of accident/incidents and work with insurance carriers to resolve such items
  • Oversees personnel needs of each department including selecting, coaching, disciplining and training employees and evaluating employee performance. Documents and provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  • Oversees customer service to assist with routing questions, product placement, driver questions.
  • Assist sales reps with contractor relationships.
  • Coordinate with customer service to address overdue routing concerns to customers

Weekly ActivitiesWork with Assistant to create KPI documents and notify CEO of recommended changes needing to be made
  • Work with Assistant to create, review/reconcile invoices, fuel spending, tolls, mileage, hours, etc..
  • Review inventory sheets for each location, order inventory for drivers or trucks when necessary
  • Discuss inventory levels with management for placing orders with manufacturers

GeneralWork with Maintenance Manager to create a routine maintenance schedule for fleetWork with Maintenance Manager to resolve vehicle issues when they arise Track, and perform tasks necessary to ensure current status of all reg, ins, permits, etc. Work with Maintenance Manager to grow a network of maintenance facilities throughout current (and upcoming) territories to reduce downtime and maintenance expense*
  • Work with lead driver supervisor to ensure efficient and prompt routing of fleet to ensure goals are met to exceed customers
  • Be able to train drivers if ever needed or in new locations
  • Travel to each location to inspect fleet, work with drivers, and ensure safety.
  • Interview and onboard new drivers as necessary
  • Create, Update, Train, and Enforce safety plan and corporate safety structure for drivers and warehouse
  • On board and oversee training for all new drivers or warehouse employees
  • Quarterly reporting for IFTA, hauler permits, IRP, HUT etc

III. Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThis role will oversee drivers, repairs/maintenance, warehouse and customer service. The right person will be available to assist their team via telephone when needed if not able to do so in person. The ideal person will have:
  • Great people skills!
  • Heavy truck mechanical experience
  • Mechanical aptitude - hands on knowledge of repairs, maintenance and trucks
  • Salesforce experience
  • Microsoft experience
  • Problem solving and service-oriented attitude
  • Experience in a team building culture
  • Ability to operate company provided technology
  • Current, valid driver's license
  • Ability to travel
  • No Smoking Policy / Drug Testing

Fleet Manager education and training requirements

Candidates should an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in logistics, business administration, automotive technology or another relevant field. Previous coursework in business administration, supply chain management, logistics and accounting provide a good foundation of industry knowledge and best practices.

Depending on the needs of the role, some candidates may be required to have a Commercial Driver’s License or other relevant vehicle or machine operator’s license. Other candidates pursue optional professional certifications that further develop their training and knowledge from organizations like the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) or the North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI).
