What does a Handyman do?
Handyman is a maintenance professional who performs routine maintenance on a client’s home or an office building. Clients will often call them to report a maintenance request and the Handyman will quickly arrive on-site to assess the situation and repair the issue. Some people in this role will complete quick or easy tasks, like simple repairs, managing several maintenance reports at once and cleaning facilities.
They’ll often analyze a company’s appliances and equipment to detect any problems and will report these issues if they aren’t functioning properly. Handymen may also be in charge of checking different community areas to see if there are any breakdowns or mechanical failures that they can repair.

Handyman education and training requirements
Training and certifications requirements for a Handyman will vary by state. Some states require that anyone who performs functions related to an Electrician, Plumber or HVAC Technician be licensed. This certification requirement may include a General Contractor’s license. A high school diploma or GED is often preferred for a Handyman role, but not always required.
Handyman experience requirements
If the business hiring a Handyman has a team of several Handymen, prior professional experience may not be required, which will open the application pool to entry-level candidates. A smaller facility may have only one Handyman who will need more experience and the ability to work alone. In this case, a minimum of 2 years’ experience is suggested. An upscale or specialized facility may require prior experience in a similar setting.
