JOB Description

Position: Mechanic

Reports TO: Transportation Supervisor

JOB Responsibilities:

Assist in maintaining and repairing all school vehicles and powered machinery, including mechanical, electrical and body work.

Assist in starting buses as required.

Effective and accurate preparation and filing of all vehicle records, including work orders, inventory, and any other forms utilized in the Transportation Department.

Provide preventative maintenance on all vehicles and machinery as assigned.

Work with Head Mechanic to order parts and materials necessary for effective repair and maintenance work.

Maintain garage area in a clean and orderly fashion.

Use proper safety measures when working on equipment.

Must be available to handle emergency needs after regular hours.

Required to transport students when necessary.

Perform welding, either gas or electric, as required.

Perform any other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director and Head Mechanic.

Required Qualification

Possess and maintain appropriate certified driver's license (CDL) status.

Preferred QualificationS:

Although a mechanics license is not required, must have the ability to become licensed within 30 days should it become a State requirement.

Two (2) years experience as a mechanic. Previous work with heavy-duty trucks is desirable.

Mechanic- Chenango County Department of Public Works has an immediate opening for a full-time Mechanic. This is a skilled mechanic position involving responsibility for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of motor equipment including, but not limited to automobiles, pickup trucks, bulldozers, graders, tractors, snowplows, dump trucks, front-end loaders, landfill compactors, forklifts. Incumbents employed by the Chenango County Department of Public Works are required to work additional hours when needed to repair and maintain public works equipment required for snow and ice removal activities or emergency storm damage cleanup activities. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed for planning the details of each assignment. Does related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have two years of full-time paid work experience or its part-time equivalent in a position of Mechanic or a similar title within the last five years with responsibility for the repair and maintenance of heavy motor vehicles and/or heavy highway construction equipment. At time of employment and continuing throughout employment a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid NYS CDL-B or higher that does not have an L airbrake restriction and a driving record acceptable to the County's insurance carrier. Candidates must also posses and maintain their own set of tools.

The positions pay $23.33 per hour and includes a full benefits package.

Primary Purpose

Responsible for all phases of the fleet maintenance and repair to include preventative maintenance services to ensure proper performance, safety, and reliability of vehicles for the transportation of CCISD students. Major Responsibilities and Duties

Service and repair gasoline, propane, CNG and diesel engines, brakes, mechanical, and air; front and rear suspensions.

Analyze and tune engines through the use of engine analyzer, ignition analyzer, injector pump tester, and coolant

Diagnose all failures of equipment, remove and replace parts as necessary, and repair any and all mechanical and electrical issues that arise.

Repairing and replacing damaged or worn parts on all equipment.

Operating and inspecting equipment to diagnose defects

Reading and understanding operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.

Diagnosing faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.

Demonstrate integrity and ethics.

Performs all necessary vehicle repairs as assigned, indicating to the Shop Foreman when repairs are complete, and another job assignment is
