Position Summary

Performs all tests commonly performed in a hospital laboratory. Maintains, operates, and troubleshoots equipment. Performs quality control.

Principal Duties AND Responsibilities

1. Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in all sections of the laboratory (chemistry, microbiology, hematology, urinalysis, blood bank, specimen dispatch).

8. Shares after hours on-call, weekend and holiday coverage on a rotational basis. Responds in case of an internal or external disaster.

10. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens and the interpretation of results.

Responsibilities

Perform STAT and routine moderately and highly complex clinical laboratory testing on biological specimens, using both manual methods and automated analyzers. Reports valid and accurate patient results in a timely manner. Interacts with physicians, nurses and other allied health individuals in a manner which is helpful in coordinating testing, correlating results, and/or promotes understanding of test availability. Provides on-call coverage to support Transplant Services as indicated by assigned work area. Qualifications

Baccalaureate Degree in Medical Technology, Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science, or health related field. Completion of a clinical laboratory training program is required. Applicants with a Baccalaureate Degree in Biology or Chemistry with completion of a clinical laboratory training program or clinical laboratory experience will be considered in the appropriate field of study (i.e. Microbiology). Must have successfully completed an accredited Medical Laboratory Technologist/Technician program. Medical Technologists are required to have working knowledge of methods, instrumentation, and principles of all testing as appropriate to assigned work areas based on individual departmental competency checklists. Must be able to work irregular hours (rotating shifts, evening, and nights). Must be able to work around machinery with moving parts, work with lasers (Barcode Scanners), and clinical instrumentation. Clinical Medical Technologist
The Synergy Medical Technologist is responsible for performing professional laboratory work, following established clinic procedures, and performing chemical and biological tests on patient specimens for medical diagnosis. Medical technologists conduct laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention. In addition, Medical Technologist analyzes bodily fluids like blood, urine, and spinal fluid to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. Key Responsibilities:

• Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology using a microscopic technique.

The Role of the Medical Technologist is to perform general laboratory high complexity testing. Essential Job Functions

Pre-Analytic:

• Read procedures fully before performing any tasks. Required training must be completed before attempting any procedure or protocol.
• Ensure the confidentiality of all patient information throughout all phases of laboratory testing. The privacy of each patient must be maintained by preventing all confidential information from being seen or heard by unauthorized persons, including other patients, visitors to the facility and any unauthorized party outside this facility.
• Ensure that all orders received by physicians are documented.
• Receipt of specimens collected by others (patient, physician, nurse): Ensure the specimens are fully labeled, are collected in the proper containers and are of adequate amount to perform testing. Each of these specimens must be matched to a requisition.

Analytic:

Inventory control: Maintain an adequate supply of all reagents and consumables to perform quality testing. Maintain records of purchasing orders and receipts. Date reagents and supplies when received and when opened. Periodically monitor inventory for expiration dates: discard expired reagents and supplies; do not use for patient testing or specimen collection. If expiration is approaching, replacement materials should be ordered.

Perform immunoassay toxicology screening on urine specimen.

Perform all routine daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic maintenance and function checks following established protocol.

Document all maintenance performed on instrument log sheets.

Perform Quality Control as established by this laboratory. If Quality Control fails, follow established protocol for repeating controls, or troubleshooting problems. Document failures and corrective actions by entering electronically into the LIS or by logging manually. Report any unresolved failures to the Lab Supervisor and/or the Laboratory Director. Do not perform or report patient testing until Quality Control problems are resolved.

Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect patient test results. Be able to apply corrective action or Laboratory Manager of these problems. Document these activities.

Perform Proficiency Testing and/or Split Sample analysis periodically as established by this facility. Retain test records and attestation sheets to show that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

Retain records of all analytic activities performed for a minimum of two years. (this includes inventory control, maintenance, calibration and verification, quality control, proficiency testing records, and any instrument printouts. Electronic storage should be periodically monitored for completeness.)

The Medical Technologist must possess a current license issued by the state if required and must have documentation of one of the following:

Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or any other applied science field.
