Teacher job title

A great job title typically includes a general term, level of experience and any special requirements. The general term will optimize your job title to show up in a general search for jobs of the same nature. The level of experience will help you attract the most qualified applicants by outlining the amount of responsibility and prior knowledge required. And if your position is specialized, consider including the specialization in the job title as well. But avoid using internal titles, abbreviations or acronyms to make sure people understand what your job posting is before clicking.

Examples of Teacher job titles

  • Teacher
  • Teacher (5+ Years’ Experience)
  • Special Education Teacher
  • Preschool Teacher (Part-Time)
  • High School Teacher
  • Elementary School Teacher

Teacher job summary

A great job description starts with a compelling summary of the position and its role within your company. Your summary should provide an overview of your company and expectations for the position. Outline the types of activities and responsibilities required for the job so job seekers can determine if they are qualified, or if the job is a good fit.

Example of a Teacher job summary

Our high school needs a Mathematics Teacher to take over classes in Geometry and Algebra II. The ideal candidate will also have a background in playing or coaching volleyball and will be able to take over that responsibility in addition to his or her classroom obligations. We’re looking for a Teacher with experience in Common Core Standards. The successful candidate will possess a keen understanding of the needs of high school students as well as an appreciation for their common struggles and issues with mathematics. We’re looking for a dedicated professional who wants to provide students with an exemplary, college-preparatory education.

Teacher responsibilities and duties

The responsibilities and duties section is the most important part of the job description. Here you should outline the functions this position will perform on a regular basis, how the job functions within the organization and who the job reports to.

Examples of Teacher responsibilities

  • Take over classes in Geometry and Algebra II for sophomore and junior students
  • Coach volleyball, both practices and games, for female students in ninth through twelfth grades
  • Chaperon classes carefully to ensure all students are learning in a safe, constructive environment
  • Prepare materials for lectures and presentations
  • Assign, correct and grade homework assignments, classroom work and tests and quizzes
  • Issue quarterly progress reports and semester report cards
  • Participate in parent-teacher meetings and communication

Teacher qualifications and skills

Next, outline the required and preferred skills for your position. This may include education, previous job experience, certifications and technical skills. You may also include soft skills and personality traits that you envision for a successful hire. While it may be tempting to include a long list of skills and requirements, including too many could dissuade qualified candidates from applying. Keep your list of qualifications concise, but provide enough detail with relevant keywords and terms.

Examples of Teacher skills

  • Master’s Degree in Education required
  • Current, valid state teaching certification required
  • 2+ years’ secondary teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with and mastery of Common Core Standards
  • Ability to build rapport with high school-age students
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrable record of helping students achieve high test scores
